Wrapped In Love ~ Malan Breton

Wrapped In Love ~ Malan Breton

Malan Breton opens Style Fashion Week in New York on the USS Intrepid.  This is the second chapter, Edelweiss, in a three chapter collection for spring summer 2018.  His collection influences are from Chopin, butterflies, nature, and music presented by Kristine W.

SFWNY 4chion Lifestyle

The Lament for Icarus, a painting Icarus representing being wrapped in love by Nymphs on his deathbed, is well represented in the collection at New York Fashion Week. Many fabrics and designs create a movement that is enveloping or flows with that dramatic effect.  Malan Breton SFWNY 4chion Lifestyle

The fabric prints and the appliques are representative of a beautiful spring day.  The fabric print is perfectly designed to create a scene with the sense of a morning breeze with the movement. Mason Grammer looks stunning on the runway in off the shoulder gown. The movement and scenery much like a walk through nature near a creek. The appliques bring an alluring texture and representation of the nature theme. Watch for the collection on the red carpet soon.

Malan Breton SFWNY 4chion Lifestyle

Breton is a designer that knows the beauty of a woman’s form. His gowns bring sexiness and confidence to any woman. This season Breton brings suit for his womenswear.  The suits add a touch of femininity and keep the woman’s form well represented. His suits incorporate the tailoring that he is known for in his menswear.

Malan Breton SFWNY 4chion Lifestyle

The menswear collection inspiration continues with blues found throughout. Blue is a pigment that is the rarest found in nature, the men’s collection draws in the night-time with hints of blues. The romance period from Chopin is clear in the collars on the jacket and dress shirts.

This is a collection for all with a touch of romance from the Chopin era, beautiful natural scenery, and movement, and will wrap the world in love.

Breton’s chapters stay true to his aesthetics elegance. The men’s silhouettes are very on point. This collection Breton styled and designed himself. His stylist for several seasons, Montgomery Frazier The Image Guru, said, “we do not put anyone in anything that is ill-fitting. If it is ill-fitted they do not wear it. The textures and fabrics fit Breton’s catch line ‘wherever you go shine.’ The fabrics are rich, opulent, exquisite tailoring, and he is about the fashion. Being here with Breton is so glamorous at Style Fashion Week with the beautiful outdoor setting and jazz music.”

Breton develops his menswear after his own experience. He states, “when I was a ballet dancer in London and on Broadway every time I lifted my arm up when wearing a suit I would lose part of my sleeve. I knew I had to figure out how to cut a suit so I do not lose part of my sleeve. I trained at Turnbull And Asser, the suit makers for the Prince of Wales. He says, “I incorporate the English tradition I learned there with my development for the men’s suits.”

The fashion show stayed true to the designers’ aesthetic while completing the story started in New York. The beauty, tailoring, and signature detailing tell the story of hope, equality, and empowerment. Concluding with the image of renewing and shining wherever you are.

James Pierce Connelly Emmys® Creative Arts Red Carpet

James Pierce Connelly joins us on the red carpet at the Emmy®Creative Arts Awards. He works production design on The Voice seen on NBC. Each year brings on new aesthetics for the set design on The Voice.

Working together with the directors, crew while keeping the audience and contestants in mind they develop a set that provides the sensory experience.

The anxiousness, nerves, and competition felt in the set design. His focus with the set design is taking the story and style of the environment to experience. This draws the audience, crew, and more into the full feeling.

Connelly’s background provides him with the visual aesthetics on stage to convey the feelings, beauty, and functionality. His parents were architect and art teacher. He participated in theater in High School and graduated from college with a fine art degree.

He faces new challenges with every new season on the set. He sees behavior is the result of environment plus personality. He sees the artists’ personality journeying through the hallways and The Voice brand as the environment. There are real stories with each artist. The set creates the feelings and storytelling. This is how he focuses the set design each season.

The new set takes a team effort, without changing the spinning chairs. He is grateful for the team he is working with on the show. He has served on the Peer Group at the Television Academy since 2008 and is on the Academy Governor’s Board. His talent and insight to aesthetics bring this Emmy winner to the Creative Arts Awards again.

Telling a Life Story, “What Happened Miss Simone”

Telling a Life Story, “What Happened Miss Simone”

Jayson Jackson What Happened Miss SImone
Emmy’s Creative Arts 2016 Red Carpet Jayson Jackson

Jayson Jackson joins us on the red carpet at the Emmy® Creative Arts Awards. What Happened, Miss Simone? Is a documentary after the personal life of Nina Simone.

Jayson Jackson produced and created, What Happened, Miss Simone, a film that discusses the woman behind the performer. Jayson says, “The story needed to be told and the timing was now” (Dolly).

Jackson states, “The lives of many performers is just their performance. Many forget that they have personal lives, struggles, and moments. This was the time to show that Miss Simone was a strong courageous woman, that lived a personal story.”

Jackson goes on to explain that telling the story required capturing the classical artist that suffered from mental illness and domestic violence. Hercivil rights voice is strong in regards to the movement. Her life impacted millions with her talent and music, but her story will bring honest living. The story reminds us that we are all human beings living and working within our own skin.

The film based on Nina’s diaries, notes she wrote on napkins, newspapers, and hotel pads. This brought the film to the life of Nina Simone. Jackson states, “The best that we can walk away from this film is honesty. That person will have a respect for the artists that honestly wear their emotions on their sleeves.”

Producing this film took on the idea of searching for footage and stories from Simone’s Life. He states, “We did not write a script. We wanted Nina Simone’s life to show us the story.” The film became just that her story. This story is about a strong woman who performes with a talent that allowed her to sing in any genre and understand the music better than some composers.

What Happened, Miss Simone took home 1 Emmy at The Creative Arts for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

The Skin We Are In ~ Honee Persona

The Skin We Are In ~ Honee Persona

Honee Persona presents fall winter 2017 fashion collection at Style Fashion Week Los Angeles. This collection is about identity. We get to choose who we are on the inside at any moment and create our fashion on that choice.

Honee Persona Style Fashion Week 4chion Lifestyel

The collection looks at the layers of being comfortable in the skin we are in.  “Since the beginning of time, we have made choices.  Fashion is also a choice,” states Persona. She is a graduate of the Art Institute of California. This collection is Asian fusion with Kabuki styling. She created rope hair extensions weaved in the hair. This collection awarded best in hair and makeup at New York Fashion Week.

Persona brings an industrial design background to her runway collection. She incorporates this in her fashion. The material used for this collection are unconventional. She uses plastic chiffon. The material made from recycled plastic and turned into chiffon.  She combines this with metals. The two unconventional materials create sculptures in the collection.

Honee Persona Style Fashion Week 4chion Lifestyel

The collection is about identity and how deeply we express ourselves. The layers we choose to wear describes who we are at the moment. The menswear is a take on a super hero, inside is outside. The menswear is masculine and strong.  We have to ask ourselves how do we express ourselves in the skin we are in.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Habana 3 A.M. with the character Max Vogue premieres at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival. This fashion film was the first fashion film to film in Cuba. This film creates a fashion journey with drama, adventure, and culture. Director Antonio Contreras Aviance takes a moment to discuss this history-making fashion film.

Antonio Contreras Aviance Director Performing at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

  • What makes this a fashion film?

Fashion is what inspired the main character of this film, Max Vogue. He is an angst-ridden fashion superhero who seeks for the truth.

  • How does location play into the screenplay of the film?

I had in mind filming in Cuba to capture the glamour and luxury. Cuba provided a perfect backdrop for the 1950s and juxtapose the traditions. The mysticism and folklore of Cuba. The location of the film gave birth to the film’s title Habana 3 A.M.

  • What is your background in film and direction?

I am a plastic artist, fashion historian and film enthusiast. I grew up watching Mexican Golden Age of Cinema films. Later I developed a love for the Italian neo-realism. My formal education was in the films of David Lynch, Almodovar, John Waters, Gus Van Sant among others. When I direct, produce, the film is my canvas.

La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet LJFFF 4Chion Lifestyle
Habana 3 AM La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet

  • This fashion film had the opportunity to film Cuba. What were some of the struggles and benefits of filming at this location?

In Cuba, people have a way of making things out of nothing, and that seems to work in a very surreal way. If you try to do things the way you are used to, you will fail but if you surrender to the forces of the supernatural you might have a chance. My cameras did not work and the location I had a permit for filming was closed for renovation.

Suddenly a priestess of Santeria, a mystical Afro-Cuban tradition, opened her doors to my cameras and brought with her an entire Cuban cast. This cast was willing to participate in my film. The cameras worked thanks to a very creative cameraman who knew how to read Chinese (the only language that the camera directions had). Then the filming finished in 5 days.

Habana 3am La Jolla Fashion Film Festival 4Chion Lifestyle -10
Habana 3 A.M. La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

  • When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?

The advantage to creating a short film is being able to intrigue a lot of people with a little dose of fashion, music, luxury, and folklore. I did not have to explain more, and that is always a good thing, “Leave before you are left.”

  • What is the back-story to creating animation?

Yes, if you want to know what happened to Max Vogue after his Cuba trip, you will find out in the animated comic. Max is pushed down the stairs after winning an award, and then he goes into an “Alice in Wonderland” type of experience. He is able to travel through time and meet his icons such as Dali, Kahlo, Hemingway, Schiaparelli etc.

Max in the comic educates and amuses about fashion history, pop culture, and art. Did you know: Yves Saint Laurent was in a mental institution for a while, Thierry Mugler was an architect and photographer, Coco Chanel spent her childhood in an adoption center and never was adopted, and Alexander McQueen had planned to commit suicide in front of a live audience? All these mysteries Max will reveal during the upcoming episodes.

Max Vogue Print 1.1 La Jolla Fashion Film Festival 4Chion Lifestyle
Habana 3 AM La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

·       What other locations this film will be screening?

The film will show in South Africa, this is the 5th edition in 2018. I am a regular guest at the festival. This is the location I met the designer Hendrik Vermuelen she designed the gowns for Habana 3 A.M. The festival of Havana in Cuba, a digital library. They will put the film in their digital library honoring the first fashion short filmed in Cuba.

Habana 3 A.M. received the International Fashion Film Award Best Jewelry to PK Bijoux. Her couture jewelry is the last piece you want to take off. The fashion film drama brings fun, history, and culture to the screenplay.

Relationships Real and Technical ~ Robots

Relationships Real and Technical ~ Robots

Robots LJFFF Best Director 4Chion LIfestyle
Robots LJFFF Best Director Photo Credit LJIFFF

Robots, World Premiere at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, gives us insight to their award-winning film. This film awarded Best Directors for Josh Brandåo and Nicolai Kornum. This film provides an insight into the blurred world of technology and human emotions that are fluid between humans and droids.

  • How does this film connect to fashion?

Robots” is an editorial style fashion film, which involves 6 primary designers, we invited them to take part in the project. The film uses fashion items creating the universe. This gives it a special aesthetic look, i.e. using close-ups of fashion items as doorways or buildings etc. We incorporate fashion with makeup and body painting for the characters’ look and use fashion accessories as props and plot points. This unique world creates the background for our story taking a critical look at our relationship with modern technology: smartphones and social media.

  •  How does location play into the subconscious side of the human affections?

It might not play a big part in life, locations seem to disappear around us when our eyes become distracted and affected by an object or subject. Using film language, however, there is an option to create places and surroundings to build the atmosphere and mood of the characters to convey their feelings. This develops a subconscious level to an audience, which opens up many possibilities.

Robots Crew La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet 4Chion Lifestyle
Robots Crew La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet Photo Credit Raymond L Forchion Jr.

  • What is the one thing you do each day to make it successful?

Drink coffee in the morning.

  • What is your background in film and direction?

We have together made several fashion films over the last 6 years that have won several awards at festivals. We develop, produce, and finish the projects together from our photographic studio based in London.

Josh Brandao has a Master’s Degree in Fashion Photography from London College of Fashion and a degree in Moving Image and Performance Design from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Nicolai Kornum worked for 8 years as a First Assistant Director in Feature Films, Commercials, and TV-Drama and trained at the European Film College in Directing and Editing.

  • When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?

Most of the fashion films we create are usually editorial fashion films showcasing several designers in the same way as a magazine editorial and are not an advertising for one specific brand. This means we have greater creative freedom but the budgets are lower, which makes short films ideal.

The short film format fits well for our stories and ideas, and is perfect for online distribution and showcasing at international festivals at this stage in our carriers.

  • This film takes on a message outside of the actual robot being the robot in the film. How was this juxtaposition developed?

We think it’s interesting how today we have become so attached to the great technology. We have the available in the palm of our hands that we seem more and more living inside the world of our smartphones and computers, perhaps neglecting what’s around us too. Of course, technology is important and has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and interactions.

In Robots, we tried to blur the lines between the humans and machines, playing with inverting the roles, both in the sense of making humans more like robots and giving actual robots human emotions.

  • What are the other locations is this film will be screening?

The La Jolla Fashion Film Festival in San Diego, California is Robots world premiere. From there we will be screening the film in the International Fashion Film Festival circuit. Our next stop is the Miami Fashion Film Festival.

This film uses fashion to create the sensory experience of reality and machines being difficult to differentiate between. This creates a conversation about this reality as a real possibility in the near future with the complex development of machines.
