‘Okja’ A Netflix Film Screens At Cannes

‘Okja’ A Netflix Film Screens At Cannes

Okja, a film with a juxtaposition on genres, screens at Grand Théâtre Lumière at Cannes Film Festival. This film’s distribution and financing by Netflix. The film’s director, BONG Joon Ho and cast take on the controversy surrounding the new media at Cannes in stride. The film brings to the forefront the concept of capitalism and conservation of natural resources.

The film synopsis: Mija, a young girl who risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend, a mystical animal named Okja. The film takes on the concept of environment, consumerism, and childhood imagination.

Tilda Swinton, Oscar award-winning actress, plays Lucy Mirando CEO of the Mirando Corporation in the film.  Mirando provides a sterile perfect image to the public, but brings the sense that there is more behind the scenes. The company developed the mystical creature. Swinton says, “The feeling of dedication and simplicity in living life that is what animals can teach us.” This film demonstrates the natural environment and capitalism struggle.

The film’s starting location creates an environment of its own. The serene mountains and childhood imagination brings a strong force of love, contrary to the conflict and suffering throughout the film.

Seo-Hyun Ahn, actress Mija, states, “I love animals too. Before shooting Okja I loved to eat meat, particularly pork. I have been greatly influenced by the character, Mija. I am sure I will not eat as much meat as before.” She is from South Korea and her career includes the film Monster.

Jake Gyllenhaal is excited about this film’s message and ability to reach hundreds of thousands through the limited theatre screenings and streaming. He states, “Sometimes it’s not just an issue of aim, it’s also an issue of when a movie comes out and what it has to say, and I think there’s no better time than now for something like this.” Okja provides a message that can be communicated to audiences worldwide.

Okja brings to Cannes Film Festival the first Netflix film screening. The debate began early in the festival about the online streaming media. Pedro Almodovar, the president of the Palme d’Or jury, states at a press conference “the screen for films should not be smaller than the chair on which you’re sitting.”

Will Smith, Palme d’Or juror, discusses the ability of his young adult children to enjoy a movie in the theatre and on home screens. He brings forward the concept that many films are not viewed in the cinema theatre. These options allow his children to experience cinema films with the escape and grandeur intended while experiencing films they would otherwise never view.

Bong, at the film’s press conference, says, “loved working with the company, its willingness to authorize a higher budget and it was a wonderful experience.” There was a glitch for the first few minutes of the screening. He also explains that he was, “excited that the press could watch the opening film scene twice.”

Swinton, states. “It’s really important the president feels free to make any statement he or she wants … but if you want to know what I really think — there’s room for everybody,” She further explains that this debate brings forward the way we are entertained and what respect is brought to the art of film. The cast tells us who there Okja is in their life here. Who is your Okja?

The Beguiled is one of the most anticipated films at Cannes Film Festival. Director, Sofia Coppola, brings the woman’s point of view and how it was for these women during this time period. The original film was from the man’s point of view. This point of view brings a new dynamic to the melodramatic remake.

Film synopsis At a girls’ school in Virginia during the Civil War, where the young women are sheltered from the outside world, a wounded Union soldier is taken in. Soon, the house is taken over with sexual tension, rivalries, and an unexpected turn of events.

This film is a remake of (The Beguiled (1971).  Both films based on the novel The Beguiled by Thomas Cullinan. The first film brings the male perspective of a wounded Union soldier. Coppola brings the story back with the perspective of the women in the boarding school.

The revisiting of The Beguiled creates its own dynamics. Coppola says, “I never tried to remake the film, go back and tell my story. I wanted to forget that and to imagine how I would make this film.” She brings the women’s stories and perspective to the forefront.

Coppola discusses the film being a feminist film, she states, “It is up to the audience to determine how they want to take it. I put my thoughts into film and you can determine how it affects you. I was making the film from the female point of view. The core of the story is the power struggle between the male and female.” The story brings this struggle to the center of the film.

Living in a boarding school atmosphere where they are all women who are functioning well, until the new dynamic, Farrell enters the school. Kidman states about Farrell’s character, “I think he comes in an ruins everything. We were fine. We only could not procreate. Good riddance to him.” The dynamic changes for each person in the film.

Kirsten Dunst, plays Edwina Dabney in the film, says “all these people pent up together no matter male, female, or a mixture. There will always be something that comes out it is a survivalist technique. Colin just happens to be what all our aggression, energy, and emotions corseted up, let’s say. They get unleashed because this new dynamic comes in.” This does bring a change for the girls attending the boarding school.

The Beguiled Nicole Kidman 4Chion Lifestyle

Nicole Kidman recalls Martha Farnsworth, her character in the film, “is very maternal. Kidman states, “She is there to protect these girls in a very treacherous difficult time. Her motivation is to protect them, to guide them, to bring them, so when the war ends they are capable.” Farrell’s character makes it difficult for the continued protection.

Colin Farrell, John McBurney character in the film, states “It has been a journeyman to get here. Many miles of roads and many corsets. It was an amazing experience shooting this film. Coppola sets a particular mood, one that is of comfort, of ease, trust, and an environment that allows you as an actor to explore and play. It was my favorite experience and shoot. Sophia is a creative beast of an engine with tenderness, elegance, and a gentility.”  Looking forward to this film? It will be in theaters June 20, 2017.

Just a few fun notes from the press conference Kidman and Coppola often swiped their hair from the left side of their faces at the same time. Kidman discusses working through mistakes, “I try to focus on the positive. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you succeed.  That is the journey. You just get back up. . . You fall over you brush off your knees and get back up. It is a really really hard thing to do. You cry and you feel. It is not saying don’t feel, but experience it navigates and get move through it. . . I’ll learn from everything.”

This 70th year will continue to evolve film worldwide. Stay tuned here for coverage of events from fashion, red carpet, actresses/actors, and films.

Hollywood’s Party ~ Golden Globes

Hollywood’s Party ~ Golden Globes

The Golden Globes starts award season each year with exceptional fashion, food, and entertainment. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors the best in film and television at the 74th annual ceremony. This year’s red carpet, dinner, award show, and after parties did not disappoint.

Many gracing the red carpet turn to a stylist to put the entire look together. “The stylist’s job is to bring all looks together that the team has envisioned for the celebrity.” (Gabriel Langenbrunner).  Gabriel styles Egith van Dinther, rising Dutch model, for the Golden Globes red carpet look. The soft romantic style is a beautiful look for the red carpet.

Styling includes:

  • Dress: Pia Gladys Perey
  • Rings: Rosalina Lydster
  • Earrings: Alyce Ross
  • Bracelet: Caterina Jewelry
  • Clutch: DeBlossom
  • Shoes: Louboutin

Red carpet fashion was a variety of gowns, pantsuits, tuxedos, and designers. This year was the year of the beard for men. The gowns were traditional, classic, and the first couture gown. The fashion was colorful with yellow being a strong presence for the evening.

The night held some great classics, new modern twists, and setting the tone for award season. The evening was fabulous from the red carpet to after parties.

Setting a Beautiful Table

Setting a Beautiful Table

thanksgiving-dinner-4chion-lifestyle
Thanksgiving Dinner

Food is a sensory experience that should carry to the table setting. The menu, setting, and food should coordinate together to say exactly what you are serving. You want the food to present in an atmosphere that tells the same story.

Presenting your food is achieved by setting the proper tableware in the correct location for the meal experience. This provides for efficiency, geometrically pleasing, and effectiveness. Your simple table setting should be as follows:

  • Spoons and knife placed right of the plate 1″ from the edge of the table.
    • Soup spoon furthest from the plate
    • Teaspoon in the middle from the plate
    • Dinner knife to closest to the plate
  • Forks placed left of the plate 1′ from the edge of the table.
    • Salad fork furthest from the plate
    • Dinner fork closet to the plate
  • Napkins placement
    • Under the forks folder
    • Folded on top of the plate
    • Set to the far left side of the place
  • Glass placement
    • Place to the right of the plate
    • Glasses should be set according to the height
    • Cups and saucers place to the right of the spoons
  • Plates
    • Placed in the center of the place setting
    • Remember that food should be served on plates that enhance the food
    • Stack the dinner plate, bread plate, and soup bowl according to diameters
    • Plates can be plain with textures to add dimension
23564002480_db27c151d3_o
Table Setting

Geometrics placing provides a balance to the visual ascetics as well as ease of use during the meal.

Table decor should flow with the meal served. This will provide a connection to the mood, food, and time of the year. Examples are:

  • Romance lace lines, soft candlelight
  • Holidays
  • Seasons
    • Adding subtle seasonal colors keep the focus on the food
    • Natural items can bring a real seasonal feel
  • Keep table clothes white or pale neutrals
    • Keep the focus on the food
    • Do not distract from the visual appeal of the food
    • Textures can help with the sensory dining experience

When serving your dinner remember that it is a sensory experience from start to finish. The setting prepares the diners for a sensory dining experience.

Summertime is Here ~ Happy Memorial Day

Summertime is Here ~ Happy Memorial Day

Memorial Day is the first celebration of the summer holiday. Many spend their time at the poolside, beach, or picnicking. Food, family, and fun are key to this holiday.

This holiday  celebration to honor those who have served and lost their lives protecting America. This holiday started shortly after the Civil War. We deeply appreciate the sacrifice of many and their families. This traditionally was known as decoration day. As a child I remember going to Almo, Idaho (a small town near the City of Rocks & Burly Idaho) to clean up the family cemetery and decorating the graves for Memorial Day.

Enjoying family traditions and recipes during Memorial Day weekend creates a connection between ourselves and those who went on before us.  We all have those tried and true recipes that come with no recipe card. It is fun to create your own traditions and recipes for the holidays.

This Memorial Day our menu will include Ciabatta and Cherry Almond Bundt Cake. It is one last time before the summer heat to get a few great bakes created. Ciabatta is a great, simple bread to start learning to create your own loaves of bread. The bread created by Arnaldo Cavallari, a miller, in Verona, Veneto, Italy in 1982 as a response to the popular French baguettes. This is a perfect bread for transportation.

Cibatta Bread 4Chion LIfestyle
Cibatta Bread

Ciabatta

3 3/4 cups of White whole wheat flour

2 1/4 Tsp. Dry Active Yeast (1 package)

2 1/4 Tsp. Salt

1 1/2 cups cold water

1/2 cups cold water

Olive oil for pans and the rising bowl

Bosch Mixer (I used the hand mixer) with dough hook(s)

Place flour, yeast (on the right side of the flour), and salt (on the left side of flour) 1 1/2 cup water in mixer bowl. Begin mixing on low. When the dough begins to form drizzle remaining 1/2 cup into the bowl and raise mixer to the next level up. Mix the dough for 5-8 minutes. You will know it is ready when it is stretchy and smooth.

Place dough in a square plastic container (enough room for bread to rise) with side oiled with olive oil. The square container assists with keeping the bread the proper shape for baking. Place lid on top. The lid keeps the dry skin from forming while bread rises. Raise dough until double in size about 1 1/2 – 1 3/4 hours at room temperature.

Dust a workspace well with flour (the dough will be sticky). Allow for it to naturally fall out of the container onto a floured surface. Coat the top of the dough with more flour. Handle the dough very carefully, don’t pat back down. You want to keep as much air as possible in the dough. Cut the dough lengthways into 4 equal sized loaves. Slightly stretch each piece lengthways and place on oiled baking trays. Let rest 30-45 min on a baking sheet.

Pre-heat oven 425 degrees. Baked bread 25 min. until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped. Cool completely on wire racks.

Cherry Bundt Cake 4Chion Lifestyle
Cherry Bundt Cake

Cherry Almond Bundt Cake

3/4 cup quartered Natural Bordeaux Maraschino Cherries

  • rinse cherries
  • dry well with paper towels
  • toss with 2 tablespoons flour
  • set aside

You can make your own maraschino cherries (make two days in advance)

  • 1 pint of sour cherries
  • 1 cup maraschino liqueur (possible substitutes are Amaretto, Grand Marnier, or contact your local store for assistance)
  • Bring liqueur to a simmer. Turn off the heat, and add the cherries, stir, let cool, and pour into jars. Refrigerate. Make these a day or two before using. Cherries last for months.

1 Cup all-purpose white flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 cup unsalted softened butter (do not microwave)

3/4 white sugar (pulse slightly in the food processor before measuring)

Zest of 1 lemon

1/8 cup plus 2 tsp. finely ground almonds

3 large eggs

Pre-heat oven 350 degrees. Fluff flour and baking powder until well mixed in a bowl. Add all ingredients except the cherries to the mixer bowl,  mix on medium speed for 2 minutes. Lightly fold cherries into batter. Place in a well butter bundt pan. Bake 25-45 min. When cooled and cake starts to pull from sides of pan remove from pan to cooling rack. Finish with Ganache and toasted almonds (place sliced almonds in a warmed pan and toss lightly until golden brown) on top.

Ganache

1 1/2 cups of heavy cream

1 lb. semi-chocolate or bittersweet chocolate chopped (we recommend 61% cacao)

In a heavy saucepan, bring heavy cream to boil. Turn off the heat. Add chopped chocolate pieces and let it rest until melted (this is key). Use a rubber spatula to stir the mixture until all the pieces are melted. Pour it into a room-temperature bowl, cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate ganache until it is firm.

The weekend meal included trout almondine, roasted garlic green beans, ciabatta bread, and cherry almond cake. A nice pinot noir is served with the meal.

May your holiday be filled with great memories and remember your lifestyle is worth the best.

Healthy Eating ~ Modern Market

Healthy Eating ~ Modern Market

What is old is new again. We see this in film, television, summer fashion trends, and food. The concept of farm to table is beginning to take traction in America. The concept that food is healthy, increases energy and provides proper nutrients is a value many are finding for their lifestyle.

Modern Market

Anthony Pigliacampo, co-owner of Modern Market, decides in 2009 the time was like no other to step aside his corporate job and begin a change in food choices for eating out. The ability to find a healthy choice at a reasonable price was the basis for the restaurant. This was the beginning of Modern Market.

Modern Market brings the farm to table concept with a modern flair. The food is prepared from farm fresh ingredients in each location each day. The staff  is trained and well prepared to cook each meal from scratch that nourishes the mind and body. The food philosophy is, “Have you ever noticed, when you eat great food you feel good?”

Pigliacampo attends the soft opening of Ahwahnee’s Modern Market. He states, “healthy food, every ingredient we consciously source. “We actually find the vendor, negotiate with our vendors about the quality products. Arizona is a good location for farm to table. Many of our greens are literally 30 hours ground to our restaurant.”  The philosophy is a holistic view on health, added sugar is the devil and good fats are friends.

Grande arrives on the red carpet wearing Alexander McQueen white wide leg pants with a Sarrieri Half Cup Demi vintage bustier lace top. The season’s trend is adding that vintage period piece to your modern styling. This piece is a great choice adding sweet romance to the evening. The shoe for the evening is Ruthie Davis Cara Boots. This is perfect as the red carpet is damp from the rain.

Her make-up for the red carpet is simple neutrals with a bold matted purple lip. The jewelry designed by Irit Design. A perfect high ponytail (her signature hair) is a nice touch to the simple styling for the red carpet. Grande presents a great style with a strong confidence on the red carpet.

Grande’s style changed from the sweet romance to the sexy jungle for her performance of “Side of Side” from her “Dangerous Woman” album. This performance with Nicki Minaj included half-naked backup dancers.

She kept the high ponytail wrapped with a Maxior hair gold cuff. Her outfit was a one-shoulder leaf printed crop top and mini skirt. This is custom design is from Baja East. The fish net stockings complete the sexy jungle. This styling added a strong sex appeal to Grande’s performance of sexual equality of bump and grind.

Her hair remained in her well-known high pony tailed wrapped in black. Grande’s makeup was the neutrals with a bold matted lip.

Grande dedicates the award to her fans. She thanks her fans for their continued support of her music and career. Her grandmother Marjorie Grande joins her for the award-winning evening. Congrats Ariana Grande on a successful evening.

Commatteo ~ New Lines

Commatteo ~ New Lines

Antonella A Commatteo, the designer of Commatteo, takes the runway wearing an asymmetrical top with a peek-a-boo short underneath. The attention to her personal style concludes the runway with a strong influence line created in the collection. Lines bring this collection a perspective that creates a personal fashion statement.

The line creation for some dresses uses a slit to create a movement that is unique to the dress. The ability to vent the dress around provides a revealing sexy appeal in the movement. Taking the dart off the gown brings a free flow movement to the gown.

The empire waistline silhouette fits the bodice, but here is designed without the normally gathered skirt. The long loose flow provides more volume to the gown and places emphasizes on the bust line. The use of lines in different directions and angles provides a visual dimension and depth to the collection.

The front of Ava Capra’s, model, dress as well as the gown was worn by Sibley Scoles, E! News Correspondent, creates a line with the placement of the geometric shapes. The back of Capra’s dress is sheer black. Continuing with the revelation of sensuality. The pleat lines below the waist provide a voluminous flow.

The dress worn by Capra the collar gives the illusion that it continues down the back. When the model turns around you see that the collar is round. Scoles’ dress uses a combination of traditional collars and necklines to create the height and depth. The various necklines in the collection combine traditional collars and neckline to create new shapes, dimensions, and illusions.

Commatteo states, “My inspiration for all my collections has always stemmed from my life’s journey. This part of my life was reaching the professional, ageless female, who loves fashion, constantly on the run, needing a mix and match pieces to change from day to  evening.” The collection brings the ability for self-expression with the ability to combine pieces and use the lines for accentuating. The fall-winter 2017 collection brings self-expression to the forefront with elegance and beauty.  See the full collection here.
