A Woman’s World, The Beguiled ~ Cannes

The Beguiled is one of the most anticipated films at Cannes Film Festival. Director, Sofia Coppola, brings the woman’s point of view and how it was for these women during this time period. The original film was from the man’s point of view. This point of view brings a new dynamic to the melodramatic remake.

Film synopsis At a girls’ school in Virginia during the Civil War, where the young women are sheltered from the outside world, a wounded Union soldier is taken in. Soon, the house is taken over with sexual tension, rivalries, and an unexpected turn of events.

This film is a remake of (The Beguiled (1971).  Both films based on the novel The Beguiled by Thomas Cullinan. The first film brings the male perspective of a wounded Union soldier. Coppola brings the story back with the perspective of the women in the boarding school.

The revisiting of The Beguiled creates its own dynamics. Coppola says, “I never tried to remake the film, go back and tell my story. I wanted to forget that and to imagine how I would make this film.” She brings the women’s stories and perspective to the forefront.

Coppola discusses the film being a feminist film, she states, “It is up to the audience to determine how they want to take it. I put my thoughts into film and you can determine how it affects you. I was making the film from the female point of view. The core of the story is the power struggle between the male and female.” The story brings this struggle to the center of the film.

Living in a boarding school atmosphere where they are all women who are functioning well, until the new dynamic, Farrell enters the school. Kidman states about Farrell’s character, “I think he comes in an ruins everything. We were fine. We only could not procreate. Good riddance to him.” The dynamic changes for each person in the film.

Kirsten Dunst, plays Edwina Dabney in the film, says “all these people pent up together no matter male, female, or a mixture. There will always be something that comes out it is a survivalist technique. Colin just happens to be what all our aggression, energy, and emotions corseted up, let’s say. They get unleashed because this new dynamic comes in.” This does bring a change for the girls attending the boarding school.

Nicole Kidman recalls Martha Farnsworth, her character in the film, “is very maternal. Kidman states, “She is there to protect these girls in a very treacherous difficult time. Her motivation is to protect them, to guide them, to bring them, so when the war ends they are capable.” Farrell’s character makes it difficult for the continued protection.

Colin Farrell, John McBurney character in the film, states “It has been a journeyman to get here. Many miles of roads and many corsets. It was an amazing experience shooting this film. Coppola sets a particular mood, one that is of comfort, of ease, trust, and an environment that allows you as an actor to explore and play. It was my favorite experience and shoot. Sophia is a creative beast of an engine with tenderness, elegance, and a gentility.”  Looking forward to this film? It will be in theaters June 20, 2017.

Just a few fun notes from the press conference Kidman and Coppola often swiped their hair from the left side of their faces at the same time. Kidman discusses working through mistakes, “I try to focus on the positive. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you succeed.  That is the journey. You just get back up. . . You fall over you brush off your knees and get back up. It is a really really hard thing to do. You cry and you feel. It is not saying don’t feel, but experience it navigates and get move through it. . . I’ll learn from everything.”

This 70th year will continue to evolve film worldwide. Stay tuned here for coverage of events from fashion, red carpet, actresses/actors, and films.

Grande arrives on the red carpet wearing Alexander McQueen white wide leg pants with a Sarrieri Half Cup Demi vintage bustier lace top. The season’s trend is adding that vintage period piece to your modern styling. This piece is a great choice adding sweet romance to the evening. The shoe for the evening is Ruthie Davis Cara Boots. This is perfect as the red carpet is damp from the rain.

Her make-up for the red carpet is simple neutrals with a bold matted purple lip. The jewelry designed by Irit Design. A perfect high ponytail (her signature hair) is a nice touch to the simple styling for the red carpet. Grande presents a great style with a strong confidence on the red carpet.

Grande’s style changed from the sweet romance to the sexy jungle for her performance of “Side of Side” from her “Dangerous Woman” album. This performance with Nicki Minaj included half-naked backup dancers.

She kept the high ponytail wrapped with a Maxior hair gold cuff. Her outfit was a one-shoulder leaf printed crop top and mini skirt. This is custom design is from Baja East. The fish net stockings complete the sexy jungle. This styling added a strong sex appeal to Grande’s performance of sexual equality of bump and grind.

The night closes with Grande receiving Artist of The Year. She kept with the red carpet styling theme. She added a vintage piece with her jewelry. Her sweet earrings and necklace from Doves by Doron Paloma are a classic timeless feel.

She wears a black crop top designed by Derek Lam. Her slouchy white pants designer Proenza Schouler. The pants have a flared bottom, but the top featured a wrap-around effect. She wears the same boots from the red carpet.

Her hair remained in her well-known high pony tailed wrapped in black. Grande’s makeup was the neutrals with a bold matted lip.

Grande dedicates the award to her fans. She thanks her fans for their continued support of her music and career. Her grandmother Marjorie Grande joins her for the award-winning evening. Congrats Ariana Grande on a successful evening.

Robert Duncan ~ Improvising

Robert Duncan ~ Improvising

Robert Duncan Composition Emmy 4Chion Lifestyle
Robert Duncan and wife Katie Emmy Creative Arts Red Carpet

Robert Duncan joins us on the red carpet at The Emmys® Creative Arts Awards. He is the composer for The Whispers main title. This is his fourth Emmys® nomination.

Duncan became interested in television themes while taking piano lessons at a young age. He would try to figure out the themes during his practice time. He enjoyed learning music by ear. His ear training leads to figuring out what the chords were for the theme songs of his favorite shows.

His teacher would ask, “Duncan did you practice your lessons?” He would respond, “no, but you can teach me to improvise.” Many of his piano lessons included improvising.

Improvising provides insight into working in the studio when composing music for television shows for Duncan. “The picture is the roadmap,” he says. The process is watching a scene or two from the show. He said, “I work through the score by sorting through what is good and throwing away the rest. I never know what it is going to sound like when starting the music composition. There is a lot of editing.”

Music, he goes on, to explain is the psychological connection for visual media. He looks for that common denominator when creating music for mass audiences. Music can make people feel certain emotions. Musical acupuncture notes and tones help with scoring music for specific scenes, themes, and moments.

He has composed for many series: Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Vanished, and Castle. He is honored for the nomination in this category. It goes back to his childhood and the days of piano practicing and lessons.

Duncan just welcomed a baby 14 days ago. This is his sixth child. He success each day is sleep and a bit of panic to get going for the day. He loves being locked in his studio with Facebook off.

Duncan looks dapper in a Tom Ford tuxedo.

The Whispers nomination is 1 Emmys® for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.

Diane Warren Emmy’s Creative Arts Red Carpet

Lady Gaga is preparing for the biggest show in sports, the Super Bowl Halftime Show. The practices and song list not released to the press at this time. This classically trained musician will present a top performance. The stakes for any performance are high. There is nothing comparing to Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s 2016 Oscars performance ‘Til It Happens to You.

This song was the theme song,  The Hunting Ground, a film about multiple students who allegedly sexually assaulted at college campuses, and there claims ignored or required to navigate a complex academic bureaucracy addressing their claims. This collaboration nominated for an 88th Oscars MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG) and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. We meet Diane Warren, at the Creative Arts Emmys®.

Emmys® Creative Arts 4Chion Lifestyle
Emmys® Creative Arts

Diane Warren’s award-winning music writing started early in life. One of her first songs was Solitaire and Hot Night, for Ghostbusters. She has worked for decades creating award-winning music.

She states, “this song became something more than ever expected. Listening to the stories of these victims compelled me to write the song. I want this song to be the inspiration to all going through a difficult time.”  We talked about the moment at the Oscars® when the victims filled the stage. The emotion that filled the room as they stood to share their message of being a victim written on their arms. She said, “It was a moment to listen and feel.”

Diane Warren is the recipient of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, at The Emmys®.  She said, “I am a bit overwhelmed at this moment.” This song has carried this message to many sexual assault victims and many more.

“‘Til it happens to you, you won’t know
It won’t be real (how could you know?)
No it won’t be real (how could you know?)
Won’t know how it feels.” (‘Til It Happens To You)

The statistics, “Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. And every 8 minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only 6 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison.” (RANN).

“If nothing changes, more than 100,000 college students will be sexually assaulted in the upcoming school year.” (Kilpatrick, Resnick, Ruggiero, Conoscenti, McCauley (2007) The Hunting Ground)

Time Behind The Scenes ~ Gary Kordan

Time Behind The Scenes ~ Gary Kordan

Gary Kordan and his wife, Justine Ungaro, join us on the red carpet at the Emmy® Creative Arts Awards. Kordan provides production design on Key & Peele on Comedy Central.

Kordan and his wife wear matching colors (black) and leather for their red carpet looks. They are a successful busy creative couple. They manage their busy lives very well. Ungaro is a professional photographer just returning from Lake Tahoe to attend The Emmy Creative Arts. She states, “It is easy for us to match our entire closet is black including the closet itself.” She is excited about the evening events and thrilled for her husband’s nomination.

Kordan started his career working at CBS. He got the positions while attending college for visual arts in New York City. He saw a flyer on a bulletin board at school. It stated that CBS was looking for an intern. He took the flyer because he wanted to be the only one applying. He interviewed and is hired for the Joan Rivers’ Show.

The show needed visuals about two weeks into the internship, Joan Rivers said, “Make the art student intern do that.” That was his first credit in production on television. Kordan states, “Joan Rivers was so supportive. She was someone to look up to and admire. She was there for you. If an up and coming artist needed food, cab fare, or scarf she was right there.” Kordan learned a lot from the experience.

This was 25 years ago. He uses those lessons to help many shows with his creativity. He enjoys the intensity on Key & Peele. Kordan breaks down the set requests, design, get approvals, find locations, and research for each set. There are two sets designed each day totaling 10 designs a week. The team travels all over the LA area to set up the designs and film the series.

Key and Peele Gary Kordan

His success for every day is wearing black, #wewearblack. He must dress the part for ruffling feathers, being demanding, and self-confident. Kordan states, “I wear black like my role model, Johnny Cash. This is Kordan’s first Emmy nomination.

Key & Peele nominated for 7 Emmys this year. They include: Outstanding Art Direction For Variety or Music Program, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, Outstanding hairstylist For Multi-Camera Series or Special, Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic), Outstanding Editing For Variety Programming, Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Reality or Reality-Competition Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in A Comedy Series, and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series.

Red carpet ready takes months of planning when you grace the Oscars® red carpet. “Look here, hey over here, look to your left, look to your right, it’s me” hundreds of photographers shout to each celebrity on the Oscars‘ red carpet. Getting to this moment in the day takes a team putting together the best-dressed celebrity. There are many red carpets in Hollywood on the day of The Academy Awards. The personal brand image plays no higher importance than on this day when thousands of cameras are capturing every detail.

2016 Oscars red carpet presented exceptional design, style, and fashion. The classic designs to a jumpsuit take the styling to a personal level. The couple of the evening was Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Cate-Blanchett-Leo-DiCaprio-oscars-red-carpet

The real miss of the evening was Heidi Klum.  The design and styling is the worst dressed. The layers of mixed materials and large flowers were only part of the problem. The diagonal cut with the peek-a-boo cleavage was just awkward. We agree there were some real misses on the red carpet this year, including Kate Winslet.

The team’s best dressed was Olivia Wilde. This stunning Valentino Haute Couture gown provided a bareback and beautiful cleavage. The chocker provided an additional sex appeal. Gabriel, @GabrielStylesU, stated, “One thing I feel all females lacked last night was accessories.”

The red carpets are endless on this night in Hollywood.  There are all the after parties, viewing parties, and more. Vanity Fair held an exceptional event and had a fun red carpet. Elton John always has a viewing party for his Aids Foundation. The other parties include:

  • Governor’s Ball
  • Fox After Party
  • InStyle Oscar Viewing Party

This day of ceremonies and parties requires detail to every aspect of styling and design. Photographers capturing every aspect of celebrities looks. A team of:
This team spends months preparing all the details for each look the celebrity will need for the evening full of events. Sean James, make-up and hair stylist to the stars, says,

“You know there are so many images that day on the red carpet. When
you are getting ready for a red carpet event go through some images
that you might want to look like. What are you going for as a look?
Remember head texture and what is important when choosing your
preferred look. This is even a good idea for men. What do they want
to do? Do they want spiky and short? He doesn’t want to be slick or
more gel. There is so many choices these days with Instagram
and Pinterest, make sure you choose the one that’s right for you.”

Sean James did Chris Hardwick‘s look for the two red carpet event he attended for the Oscars this year. Sean James has styled Jamie Lee Curtis, worked with Talking Dead actors, Kim Kardashian, and many more.
The stylist’s job is to bring all looks together that the team has envisioned for the celebrity. Gabriel Styles U, says, “Bringing one’s image to life is simple. BE YOURSELF. Don’t conform to what people want or think you should look like. Wear your clothing with confidence smile and seize the day.” Gabriel has styled:
