Amber Nash Emmys® Creative Arts 2016 Red Carpet

Amber Nash joins us on the red carpet at the Emmy® Creative Arts Awards. Her character is Pam Poovey on FX Networks’ Archer. This show allows her to be apart of a smart dirty show.

Nash’s background is comedy, theatre, film, and voiceover. Improv is an important part of her acting world. She continues as time permits to give at Dad’s Garage in Atlantic City. She loves being able to read the audience and respond to the actors on the stage. Moving to a studio setting where she is alone was a change.

Nash said, “it has taken me some time to adjust to the setting after being in the theatre. I am now able to accurately predict how my co-actors will sound and act in each script. My improv training really helped with the adjustment.”

She discusses how much fun and lucky she is to play Pam. Her character is able to say some of the most, “dirty, terrible, horrible things. The writers create such smart content. I love how smart it is. I have to look up references with every script. I am able to learn about the world.”

The fans love Pam and Nash loves her fans. She discussed how important each one is to the show. She said, “some fans even have Pam tattoos.”

She looked fabulous in Adrianna Papell gown, a designer we both enjoy because of her feminine touch and attention to the woman form.

Archer took home 1 Emmy at The Creative Arts for Outstanding Animated Program.

Telling a Life Story, “What Happened Miss Simone”

Telling a Life Story, “What Happened Miss Simone”

Jayson Jackson What Happened Miss SImone
Emmy’s Creative Arts 2016 Red Carpet Jayson Jackson

Jayson Jackson joins us on the red carpet at the Emmy® Creative Arts Awards. What Happened, Miss Simone? Is a documentary after the personal life of Nina Simone.

Jayson Jackson produced and created, What Happened, Miss Simone, a film that discusses the woman behind the performer. Jayson says, “The story needed to be told and the timing was now” (Dolly).

Jackson states, “The lives of many performers is just their performance. Many forget that they have personal lives, struggles, and moments. This was the time to show that Miss Simone was a strong courageous woman, that lived a personal story.”

Jackson goes on to explain that telling the story required capturing the classical artist that suffered from mental illness and domestic violence. Hercivil rights voice is strong in regards to the movement. Her life impacted millions with her talent and music, but her story will bring honest living. The story reminds us that we are all human beings living and working within our own skin.

The film based on Nina’s diaries, notes she wrote on napkins, newspapers, and hotel pads. This brought the film to the life of Nina Simone. Jackson states, “The best that we can walk away from this film is honesty. That person will have a respect for the artists that honestly wear their emotions on their sleeves.”

Producing this film took on the idea of searching for footage and stories from Simone’s Life. He states, “We did not write a script. We wanted Nina Simone’s life to show us the story.” The film became just that her story. This story is about a strong woman who performes with a talent that allowed her to sing in any genre and understand the music better than some composers.

What Happened, Miss Simone took home 1 Emmy at The Creative Arts for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Habana 3 A.M. with the character Max Vogue premieres at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival. This fashion film was the first fashion film to film in Cuba. This film creates a fashion journey with drama, adventure, and culture. Director Antonio Contreras Aviance takes a moment to discuss this history-making fashion film.

Antonio Contreras Aviance Director Performing at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
  • What makes this a fashion film?

Fashion is what inspired the main character of this film, Max Vogue. He is an angst-ridden fashion superhero who seeks for the truth.

  • How does location play into the screenplay of the film?

I had in mind filming in Cuba to capture the glamour and luxury. Cuba provided a perfect backdrop for the 1950s and juxtapose the traditions. The mysticism and folklore of Cuba. The location of the film gave birth to the film’s title Habana 3 A.M.

  • What is your background in film and direction?

I am a plastic artist, fashion historian and film enthusiast. I grew up watching Mexican Golden Age of Cinema films. Later I developed a love for the Italian neo-realism. My formal education was in the films of David Lynch, Almodovar, John Waters, Gus Van Sant among others. When I direct, produce, the film is my canvas.

La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet LJFFF 4Chion Lifestyle

  • This fashion film had the opportunity to film Cuba. What were some of the struggles and benefits of filming at this location?

In Cuba, people have a way of making things out of nothing, and that seems to work in a very surreal way. If you try to do things the way you are used to, you will fail but if you surrender to the forces of the supernatural you might have a chance. My cameras did not work and the location I had a permit for filming was closed for renovation.

Suddenly a priestess of Santeria, a mystical Afro-Cuban tradition, opened her doors to my cameras and brought with her an entire Cuban cast. This cast was willing to participate in my film. The cameras worked thanks to a very creative cameraman who knew how to read Chinese (the only language that the camera directions had). Then the filming finished in 5 days.

Habana 3am La Jolla Fashion Film Festival 4Chion Lifestyle -10
Habana 3 A.M. La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
  • When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?

The advantage to creating a short film is being able to intrigue a lot of people with a little dose of fashion, music, luxury, and folklore. I did not have to explain more, and that is always a good thing, “Leave before you are left.”

  • What is the back-story to creating animation?

Yes, if you want to know what happened to Max Vogue after his Cuba trip, you will find out in the animated comic. Max is pushed down the stairs after winning an award, and then he goes into an “Alice in Wonderland” type of experience. He is able to travel through time and meet his icons such as Dali, Kahlo, Hemingway, Schiaparelli etc.

Max in the comic educates and amuses about fashion history, pop culture, and art. Did you know: Yves Saint Laurent was in a mental institution for a while, Thierry Mugler was an architect and photographer, Coco Chanel spent her childhood in an adoption center and never was adopted, and Alexander McQueen had planned to commit suicide in front of a live audience? All these mysteries Max will reveal during the upcoming episodes.

·       What other locations this film will be screening?

The film will show in South Africa, this is the 5th edition in 2018. I am a regular guest at the festival. This is the location I met the designer Hendrik Vermuelen she designed the gowns for Habana 3 A.M. The festival of Havana in Cuba, a digital library. They will put the film in their digital library honoring the first fashion short filmed in Cuba.

Habana 3 A.M. received the International Fashion Film Award Best Jewelry to PK Bijoux. Her couture jewelry is the last piece you want to take off. The fashion film drama brings fun, history, and culture to the screenplay.

To Bring Pleasure ~ Jerry Lewis

To Bring Pleasure ~ Jerry Lewis

Gregory Monro, writer and director presents an insight to Jerry Lewis, filmmaker and actor, with the film Jerry Lewis The Man Behind The Clown at Prescott Film Festival (PFF). The title fits the complex talent and childlike nature of Lewis. The film brings an insight to the comedian, filmmaker, and his ability to bring pleasure to his audience.

Prescott Film Festival 4Chion Lifestyle
Prescott Film Festival

Capturing the early days of the 1950 and 1960s with personal clips brings laughter to the audience at PFF. His work with Dean Martin, a partnership develops after bar incident, capture the gentleman and childhood fun. When this partnership comes to an end, Lewis took on a new direction.

He steps into behind the scenes role of filmmaking. Lewis takes time to learn all areas of filmmaking: directing, acting, camera, and production. His films included The Bellboy,  The Ladies Man, and much more.

Lewis took direction and acting to a serious  level by creating “Jerry’s Noisy Toy.” This invention changed filmmaking forever. His ability to frame a film, create films years ahead of their time, and direction of this film is groundbreaking. He states, “If you think talking to me is easy, you’re crazy,” about directing himself.

The personal interviews with Sean Hayes, an actor who played Lewis a TV biopic, Pierre Etaix, a French clown, and Martin Scorsese are personal. The interview brings complexity to the clown face. Lewis was not only an American comedian but internationally honored as an extraordinary filmmaker. Monro’s film shows Lewis as many Americans see him, the childhood comedian, and the international view, an exceptional filmmaker.

Often misunderstood and criticized for his work, but he brings brilliance to entertainment with laughter, art, and innovation to film. Lewis says, “If you give love to your audience they will give it back.”He was always a child. Lewis states, “I have always been 5.” You could see this in his comedy personality.

Lewis, a humanitarian, actor, comedian, influence in film, a child, and man is in this film. He never lost his childhood spirit. This brought pleasure to his audiences enjoying his films.

Grief and Loss ~ “The Visit” a Film By Romina Schwedler

Grief and Loss ~ “The Visit” a Film By Romina Schwedler

Romina Schwedler, screenwriter and director, presents her first film, The Visit, at Prescott Film Festival. This short film is a juxtaposition on life events.

The Visit is a day in the time of a visit with a mother (June Squibb) and son (Sean Maher). The story takes a specific moment in time during the son’s life and develops a sequence of events that change lives. The son must face the consequences of the events.

Schwedler’s attention to details in the film completes the story. She states, “every little detail, in the lighting, the wardrobe design, and every odd thing matters.” The juxtaposition of this story develops well with the attention to details.

Schwedler develops the story from a conversation she had with her father concerning her aunt. Her aunt experiences loss of most family and friends. Coping with the deep grief and loss her aunt develops elaborate stories about those she lost. Her techniques in film development here allow the audience to experience the emotions in the story.

The casting for the short film was “serendipitous,” she says. She approaches June Squibb, Oscar-nominated actress, at an award dinner in Los Angeles with a flash drive of the script. Sean Maher, Ben in the short film, heard about the project and appreciates June Squibb’s work. His agent contacted Schwedle in regards to working on the project.  The casting provides a twist much like the film. Check local film festival events for screening.

Relationships Real and Technical ~ Robots

Relationships Real and Technical ~ Robots

Robots LJFFF Best Director 4Chion LIfestyle
Robots LJFFF Best Director Photo Credit LJIFFF

Robots, World Premiere at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, gives us insight to their award-winning film. This film awarded Best Directors for Josh Brandåo and Nicolai Kornum. This film provides an insight into the blurred world of technology and human emotions that are fluid between humans and droids.

  • How does this film connect to fashion?

“Robots” is an editorial style fashion film, which involves 6 primary designers, we invited them to take part in the project. The film uses fashion items creating the universe. This gives it a special aesthetic look, i.e. using close-ups of fashion items as doorways or buildings etc. We incorporate fashion with makeup and body painting for the characters’ look and use fashion accessories as props and plot points. This unique world creates the background for our story taking a critical look at our relationship with modern technology: smartphones and social media.

  •  How does location play into the subconscious side of the human affections?

It might not play a big part in life, locations seem to disappear around us when our eyes become distracted and affected by an object or subject. Using film language, however, there is an option to create places and surroundings to build the atmosphere and mood of the characters to convey their feelings. This develops a subconscious level to an audience, which opens up many possibilities.

Robots Crew La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet 4Chion Lifestyle
Robots Crew La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet Photo Credit Raymond L Forchion Jr.
  • What is the one thing you do each day to make it successful?

Drink coffee in the morning.

  • What is your background in film and direction?

We have together made several fashion films over the last 6 years that have won several awards at festivals. We develop, produce, and finish the projects together from our photographic studio based in London.

Josh Brandao has a Master’s Degree in Fashion Photography from London College of Fashion and a degree in Moving Image and Performance Design from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Nicolai Kornum worked for 8 years as a First Assistant Director in Feature Films, Commercials, and TV-Drama and trained at the European Film College in Directing and Editing.

  • When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?

Most of the fashion films we create are usually editorial fashion films showcasing several designers in the same way as a magazine editorial and are not an advertising for one specific brand. This means we have greater creative freedom but the budgets are lower, which makes short films ideal.

The short film format fits well for our stories and ideas, and is perfect for online distribution and showcasing at international festivals at this stage in our carriers.

  • This film takes on a message outside of the actual robot being the robot in the film. How was this juxtaposition developed?

We think it’s interesting how today we have become so attached to the great technology. We have the available in the palm of our hands that we seem more and more living inside the world of our smartphones and computers, perhaps neglecting what’s around us too. Of course, technology is important and has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and interactions.

In Robots, we tried to blur the lines between the humans and machines, playing with inverting the roles, both in the sense of making humans more like robots and giving actual robots human emotions.

  • What are the other locations is this film will be screening?

The La Jolla Fashion Film Festival in San Diego, California is Robots world premiere. From there we will be screening the film in the International Fashion Film Festival circuit. Our next stop is the Miami Fashion Film Festival.

This film uses fashion to create the sensory experience of reality and machines being difficult to differentiate between. This creates a conversation about this reality as a real possibility in the near future with the complex development of machines.
