The theme for the evening was one that brought creativity and exceptional fashion. The costume exhibit this season examines how fashion designers have been influenced by Catholic aesthetics. The theme went from religious influences in fashion to focus on Catholicism. This was adjusted when the curator decided that focusing on religious influences was too much for one show. The Catholic church not unhappy with the art collection and has donated pieces for the art show. The annual show at the museum dictates the theme and dress code for the evening.

The celebrities hit the red carpet with great creations of fashion, style, and makeup. Versace was popular fashion. Donatella Versace wore a design of her own that is sexy and gorgeous in a beautiful ornately embroidered coat and dress navy and gold boots. This was perfect for the evening. Her boots were fabulous. There were many celebrities wearing Versace at the Met Gala. This is appropriate because the fashion house being in Italy and often includes catholic religion in their fashion. The celebrities wearing Versace include:

  • Kim Kardashian in a full-length gold gown with a gold cross on the front.
  • Mingos wore matching print bold suits. They are very fitting for evening’s theme. (Best Dressed men)
  • Gigi Hadid in a gorgeous blue embellish wings with a high slit. (Best Dressed woman)
  • SZA in a soft pink heavenly gown with great embellished pink boots.
  • Mary J Blige in an elegant light mint green gold gown, thigh-high boots (it is an evening for boots) and L’ Dezen by Payal Shah jewels.
  • Zendaya wears a silver military Joan of Arc influenced gown, Jimmy Choo heels, and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.
  • Katy Perry brings the wings the Met Gala theme with sexy gold thigh-high boots.
  • Blake Lively in a regal elegant red and gold ornate detailed gown with a beautiful tiara and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

Rihanna brought some controversy with her dress like the Pope. She wore a gem-encrusted Margiela mini-dress and matching coat, and a giant mitre. Amal Clooney one of the best dressed of the night. She wore cigarette pants with a strapless foil top and a train that flowed from the waist. This is a modern take on the mother Mary.  The fashion continued with the theme throughout the evening.  The inspiration for the Met Gala includes Cardinals, Mother Mary, art, and elegant embellishments. The evening was full of crosses and other religious symbols. The evening was awe-inspiring.

Over The Rocky Mountains We Go ~ Road Trip

Over The Rocky Mountains We Go ~ Road Trip

The Rocky Mountains (Rockies) was home for me for decades. Many of my ancestors crossed over these mountains to settle the Salt Lake Valley. These gorgeous mountains brought each seasons beauty with exceptional colors. Heading over the Rockies my sister, Cherie, joins for the rest of the journey.

Utah Rocky Mountains Road Travel 4Chion Lifestyle

Utah Rocky Mountains

Growing up near the mountains, the seasons each bring a wonderful set of adventures. Mount Timpanogos, a view seen from the deck of my childhood home, is the second highest mountain the Wasatch Range. It is a great place for:

  • Summer
    • hiking including to Timpanogos Cave
    • camping
    • fishing
    • river rafting
    • boating
    • Alpine Slide in Park City
    • Seven Peaks Water Park
  • Fall
    • Drive the Alpine Loop at the peak of the leave colors
    • Picnicking
    • Visit Bridal Veil Falls
  • Winter
  • Spring
    • Thanksgiving Point
    • Utah Film Festival
    • Crandall Historical Printing Museum (covers 400 years of printing)

The area has exceptional art and culture events as well. This is a great place for family road trips and staying for a week of fun.

Lunchtime

Leaving Utah County through Spanish Fork Canyon is a beautiful drive. Spanish Fork Canyon goes south over Soldier Summit (7,477 ft.) and then back down through Price Canyon. The drive is very scenic and great for Geology fans. It is full of wildlife. The Rocky Mountains are such a beautiful relaxing place to play and explore.

We stop in Green River just before Colorado. Lisa Sherman recommended having lunch at Ray’s Tavern. This was our first travel contest. Congrats, to Wes Hawkins at Utah Travels for knowing what city we were enjoying lunch. We ordered the chicken sandwich and a Garden Burger®. They had a Utah tradition on fry sauce, created by Don Carlos Edwards in the 1950s. It is as simple as ketchup and mayonnaise whipped together. I have seen variations with adding sour cream or buttermilk. This was a treat for sure. It was a great place. The waitress extremely friendly and the food fresh, including the fries.

Colorado Rocky Mountains

Full and ready to get through Colorado to Denver. We hit the road again and see the landscape change more. You lose sight of the Rocky Mountains. The Green Rivers flow into Colorado River (the mighty river that creates the Grand Canyon). The highway follows this along through Colorado Rockies.

Cherie and Tammy Road Trip 4chion lifestyle
Cherie and Tammy Road Trip

The I-70 takes on new meaning to the Rockies. You enter this large canyon and marvel at the engineering feat you are driving. Colorado River runs through the narrow canyon that has two-lane traffic in each direction through Glenwood Canyon. The rain and temperature begin falling. Soon iMaps lets us know that we are not going to make to Denver for the night. The freeway closes just up the road for snow. I need to find a hotel before they fill-up. We find the Eagle River Lodge. This was a perfect place to stay for the evening.

Colorado Rocky Mountains road trip 4chion lifestyle
Colorado Rocky Mountains Road Trip

The driving time cut short we enjoyed an evening of great local food and beauty time. Cherie went out to pick-up dinner from Luigi’s Pasta House salad and a medium vegetable pizza. After dinner, we enjoyed a night of cleansing, moisturizing, and using masks on our faces and lips with Burt’s Bees. I have been on the road for a week and traveling through various climates, different types of soap and water, and sleeping locations my skin was feeling tired and dry. Burt’s Bees is so wonderful. Cherie even enjoyed the results. When on a road trip it is important to remember to take care of your skin. Playing on the television in the room was a marathon of Tom Hank’s movies. We head off to sleep for another day of road tripping across the US.

Omobolaji A Onaolapo Designer of Love Collection

Onaolapo began sewing from watching her mother sew curtains and bedding. She began with pencil sketches and began creating her clothing while in college. Soon her friends began asking for her to create clothing of them. Completing her degree she worked in the gas and oil industry, but one day decided to quit and focus on her golden empire, fashion.

Onaolapo began with a bespoke brand catering mainly for weddings and special events. Her designs have been on many red carpets and celebrities. Her designs represent her belief that women should fit the clothing and not the clothing fitting the woman. This spring summer 2018 collection brings the woman to a look that fits her every curve and line in an asymmetrical fashion.  Onaolapo stays focused and directed each day on her talent and dreams.

Balance In Life

Onaolapo enjoys starting her day successful. She states, “The first thing I do in the morning is open my eyes and say a prayer of gratitude. I know it sounds silly but it gets me positive and ready for the day when I acknowledge all the great things I have going for me.” This positive start to the day helps her maintain balance in life.

Developing an international fashion company takes a lot of time and effort. She maintains a balance by, “making sure I have a start and stop times. Yes, some days I can’t help it when work runs later than planned but I make sure that doesn’t happen a lot. So my loved ones don’t feel neglected and I have time for myself as well,” she says. This is an important example of taking care of self and personal relationships.

She continues with life balance and with exercise, a lot. She works on, strength training, yoga, and cardio. I can’t do without my workout routines. I am also super conscious of my diet so I try to stick to natural meals and freshly cooked meals.” Her focus on balancing her health, relationships, and business keep her on track to continue focusing on personal goals and achievement.

Achievement and Goals

Her biggest achievement to date is that she has not quit. She says, “Because this job is super stressful and demanding. And despite that my brand keeps growing.” Her insight into the fashion industry and continuing to develop and grow is stressful but maintains a good life balance with health, focus, and personal relationships.

She continues to focus and drive with her goal in place. Her top goal is, “the future includes pushing my brand to a level of success where it becomes a force to be reckoned with in fashion. Another important goal of mine is to use my medium (Fashion) to make an impact in people’s lives. If I can help one or two people do their goals and make their dreams a reality then that translates to success for me.” She is aware of her brand, success, and the women she is designing.

Kyle Denman’s latest design inspiration is a woman spilling her champagne awarded him Young Designer at Fashion Designers’ and Craft Makers’ Network (FDC-YDA) Soiree in New York City. He is a young fashion designer that is passionate, creative, and determined.  He took the theme Rolling Twenties to create a timeless classic modern gown.

Designing

The gown took the theme and champagne significant during the 1920s to create a look of spilling champagne. The theme and gown bring the relevance and fashion forward. The gold bust is made from vegan leather. This look takes on the color of freshly poured champagne. This brings a richness and elegance. Taking the flapper texture to a new modern look. The 30 yards of organza is hand sewn to create the bubbles from the spilling champagne.  This creation is ébullition (French for bubbling). The small hand-sewn pearls give a nice texture and representation of smaller bubbles in champagne. This is an elegant avant-garde gown bringing the theme full circle.

Where Fashion Design Started

Denman changed his life career from a degree in political science to fashion.  He was new to sewing, but that did not stop him from changing his career. He is a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and an associate professor at FIDM. Project Runway awarded Denman grand prize in the ReMake It Work Contest.

His approach to design is sensual, sexy, modern, with a hint of classic remaining. The woman he designs for feels beautiful, powerful, and elegant. He is a powerhouse that will be one of the top designers in America.

Balancing Life with Health and Wellness

He works hard on success every day. The one thing he does each day to make it successful is, “Every morning, I wake up and have a cup of coffee while I journal.  Journaling is incredibly important for me to collect all of my thoughts, both intellectual and creative.  I will write, sketch, and list things and people for which I am grateful.  This helps me stay humble and helps me recognize the important people in my life who have helped me get to where I am today.  I also pick an outfit that matches the mood I want to have.  I have studied a bit about the metaphysics of fashion, and it’s really astounding.  I also like to accessorize my look with a watch, which is my go-to accessory.  Once I have that on, I am ready for the day!” His has a dedication to staying focused and balanced in life.

Balancing life with the stress of the fashion industry is key to keeping the focus. Denman finds balance by, “Fashion design is an incredibly personal form of art.  Whenever I make a garment or a collection, I really invest my time and inject a bit of myself, my mind, and my heart into it.  I try to tell a story.  I think that’s what makes fashion so profound—it is so personal.  Because of the work, I do as a teacher, the confluence of work and personal life is incredibly dramatic.  In order to balance these two areas, I try to organize myself as much as possible.  I have a to-do list with me at all times, and my planner is color-coated and matches a calendar that I have in my room.  I try to never have free time, either.  Instead, time is always dedicated towards something, even if it means time to relax or time to spend with friends.  I also think maintaining a stress-free life is a mindset.  Rather than think that I am busy and stressed, I think that I am hard-at-work and focused on my career.” This shows in his ability to stay well-rounded as a step to staying healthy in a busy life.

Denman focuses on healthy living with a focus on his mental health. He states, “Fashion design is an incredibly stressful field.  Staying healthy can be very difficult to do—oftentimes, I will leave my apartment as soon as the sun rises and will not return until after midnight.  The industry is long days.  Because my schedule is so busy, I try to stay healthy by staying mentally healthy as well as physically healthy.  Besides exercising (my friend trains me here-and-there and helps record my progress). I will often read books or scholarly articles, listen to podcasts or TED Talks, or visit museums on free days to continuously stimulate my mind.  Additionally, I try to eat as healthy as possible.  Sometimes, it may just be some packed vegetables and hummus for lunch because of my schedule, but I really try to keep up a healthy lifestyle. However, I know that I can always be healthier (I just love baking homemade chocolate chip cookies!).”

Achievements

He approaches life and success with a strong force and determination. His best achievement to date is, “receiving the title of Young Fashion Designer of the Year is an incredible achievement.  Truly, it is an honor.  It was also amazing to be recognized as the Grand Prize Winner of the Project Runway Remake It Work Contest.  However, I would also consider being a teacher an achievement that I hold very close to my heart.  I now teach fashion design through a nonprofit called Freedom and Fashion.  I teach young women who are survivors of human trafficking, homelessness, abuse, assault, and other injustices.  These young students and designers are so special to me, and being able to spend time with them is an achievement to me—they are so talented and are so kind.  It’s really an honor to be in their presence and call them students and friends.  I love watching them grow as designers and as people; I can honestly say my heart is so full when I am with them.” He brings his skill, energy, and power to other providing future opportunities for many.

Future Goals

I would love to continue designing for celebrity clients and entering fashion shows around the world.  Being able to witness the transformation of a garment or a collection is really special.  From idea to sketch to sample to completed look, the transformative appeal of fashion is undeniable.  To have the ability to be so creative is amazing, and I feel incredibly lucky to have the chance to be so creative every day.  I hope to expand upon this creativity, continue to work hard and working with Freedom and Fashion.  A long-term dream of mine has always been to work on Dancing with the Stars as one of the designers.

The stars hit the Golden Globes unified in black bringing the #timesup and #metoo conversation to the red carpet. The award season began with the hashtags #TimesUp connecting to the #MeToo conversation already started. Twitter exploded with the hashtag #MeToo when Alyssa Milano stated Oct 15, 2017, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.”  The Oscar’s night concluded the award season with #TimesUp and #MeToo social media posts, red carpet accessories, and comments in speeches. Tarana Burke founded “the me too” movement to help survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. Powered by women, TIME’S UP addresses the systemic inequality and injustice in the workplace that has kept underrepresented groups from reaching their full potential.

Panel Discussion #MeToo and #TimesUp

Harnish brings up the Teen Vogue article where interviewed 54 women at the festival this year and they all stated they had been sexually harassed or assaulted during the festival. Papisova states in her article that in the 10 hours she was in attendance she was groped 22 times. The stories described many predatory behaviors.  Harnish states that men must be a positive force in this change as well.

Berman discusses production a film, Nanny Diaries with Harvey Weinstein. She discusses that she was one of the few female directors for production. She states that it was a horrific experience. She is tortured by the thoughts of what may have happened to her crew and actors on set. She really now questions and tries to remember has she missed something.  The #TimesUp legal fund is for all sexual assault and harassed victims. This fund in a few months has raised over 26 million dollars.

Dowd brings up the fact that this is a revolutionary change. Women and many human beings will lead the way to perpetuate this systemic change. We need to empower with the stories that are being told. This needs to change on many levels. He believes that this is our time and that the time is up.

Lesley Wexler, a Law professor at the University of Illinois, asks, “I am wondering about the thoughts you have for sort of accountability and reckoning with the past as you look forward and make all these efforts to be more inclusive the future?” Nava replies, “It is something we are grappling with at the Academy it is very very difficult issue it is a very very difficult issue to deal with.”

Conversations Around #MeToo and #TimesUp

Jennifer Robbennolt, Colleen Murphy, and Lesley Wexler argue that “reformers of the burgeoning #MeToo movement ought to heed the core principles of restorative and transitional justice and take into account the needs of both victims and offenders, as well as the larger community.”

Diane Warren, a collaborator on Til It Happens to You states, “this song became something more than ever expected. Listening to the stories of these victims compelled me to write the song. I want this song to be an inspiration to all going through a difficult time.” at The Creative Arts Emmys. This song has carried this message to many sexual assault victims and many more.

Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Salma Hayek spoke to the effects ushered in by the producer’s downfall. “The changes we’re witnessing are driven by the powerful sound of new voices, of different voices, of our voices joining together in a mighty chorus that is finally saying time’s up,” Judd added.

Statistics

90% of female concertgoers have been harassed at a music event. (Chicago Tribune)

The statistics, “Every 98 seconds, an American (this is not just a woman issue) is sexually assaulted. And every 8 minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only 6 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison.” (RANN)

Roger Ebert created Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival or better known as Ebertfest. Ebert was a TV and Chicago Sun-Times film critic. This festival is held at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign IL. This place is near Ebert’s hometown, Urbana. This year celebrates 20 years of Ebertfest. Chaz Ebert, Ebert’s wife keeps his traditions returning each year. The film festival brings back some great films and panels.

Unacceptance to Self-Acceptance ~ Belle A Film

Belle is a film about growing from un-acceptance to self-acceptance. Dido Elizabeth Belle, actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is a true story of a high society young African-American mixed English during the 18th century. Belle finds herself in high society but has a hard time finding herself anywhere.

She struggles to balance things every day. She is the daughter of a slave and Sir John Lindsay, a navy ship captain. Her grandparents become her caregiver, Mansfield Her status as aristocrats provides her a lifestyle that is of class and comfort. This story looks at gender, race, and class.

Belle finds herself eating alone when guests arrive she is not allowed to dine with the staff at this time either. This reality is her status is not high enough to eat with guests but too high to eat with the servants. She is kept hidden from society, during a time that many young women traditionally come out to society for formal courtship.

Her cousin, Elizabeth groomed and readied for her coming out, even though she has no dowry to offer. Belle being an heiress to her father’s fortune after his untimely death provides her dowry, but does not have social standing for courtship. The custom at this time is a black woman is not seen in white circles.

She finds herself struggling with the fact that she is not fully accepted because of her skin color. The complexity love from her family but the burden of being unaccepted becomes a climactic moment where she is clawing at her skin and face in anguish. A strong demonstration of what is going on inside Belle as she struggles with being the daughter of a slave and a navy captain.

This struggle is one that many faces in life. They take on the social standards for beauty and how we each place expectations on ourselves wanting acceptance by others.  The film demonstrates Belle bringing her to self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is a great health Releasing that she is more than her skin color. She embraces the love of her life leaving behind her status in high society. The director, Amma Asante,  brings the story from the inside of Belle to the outside makes it authentic and real.

The director addresses the realization of the time period issues of race, class, and gender. She uses layers to present her story. The complexity being African-American woman who is learning gain acceptance of herself in her place in life. This layering brings this very relatable struggle for many even today.  Belle’s journey of self-acceptance brings the audience full circle from unacceptance to self-acceptance.

The story based on a painting of Elizabeth and Belle that hung in the Kenwood house for decades. The painting shows Belle slightly elevated in the painting to her white cousin. They are touching in this painting. It demonstrating that Elizabeth is accepting of Belle and her new self-acceptance in life. Belle finds empowerment, freedom, and happiness with her self-acceptance. The film brings love, change, and equality to the forefront while showing the development of self-assurance.

Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Sitting in the local Champaign coffee shop, Cafe Kopi, with Sara Siders a musician, composer, and guitarist. She is a boundary pusher not only in her music but life. Sider’s is a transplant to the Champaign, Illinois music scene. Her strong sense of rock, blues, and funk to her performance and music.

Sara Siders is the lead singer for Mank and Sass, she grew up around the music world. Her father, Bruce Hall, is the lead bass guitarist for Reo Speedwagon.  Siders states, “My father has lived his dream so you cannot tell me that dreams do not come true.” Seeing her father’s happiness she learned that you can make anything happen.

Enjoying her childhood, staying out of the limelight most of the time. Siders recalls, “going on stage with the ‘fambamfamily’ to sing “Roll With The Changes”  As a child, she enjoyed pushing the boundaries. She says, “The joke is sports or jail for me.”

She enjoyed playing softball. She earned a place on the practice team on the Olympic Women’s softball team at the age of 15 she states, “I could not even drive myself to practice.” She earned a scholarship to Purdue for softball. This was a great opportunity for her, but her junior year her dream to play softball ended because of 5 knee surgeries.

The day she found out she was no longer able to play sports. She locks herself in her room. She was not sure what she was going to do with her life at this point. “School was not my forte.”  Her roommate, Matt Zimmerman, threw her a guitar and told her to figure it out. That was the first time she had taken an interest in music. She did figure out the guitar and that she could sing.

Sara Siders discusses how she has huge stage fright. She began singing with her back to the audience. To this day she still has stage fright. She is still trying to get over stage fright. She has recently made a choice to stop drinking and that has intensified the fear. Her approach now is singing with her eyes closed. Sometimes friends will come up to the stage and stand there for minutes before she realizes someone is there. The smaller intimate performances are much more frightening for Siders than the larger arenas. She states, “she feels like the intimate settings are more personal and come with expectations of more talking.” The expectation that she should tell her story about each song and the inspiration behind the music.

She has taken the challenge of facing a change in her dreams to figuring out a new passion and facing her own fears of performance to make her new dream come true.  She feels that the uncomfortably is present in her performance. She remembers even as a young child being coaxed to the stage to sing with her family. Her performances include music she composes as well as covers like My Neck My Back.

Sara Siders is also a music composer. The ability to hear the song and play songs, she believes is genetically inclined to her family. Siders is like her father in that there was no formal structural music training. She is able to write the lyrics and the music without the ability to read music. This gives her the believer and dreamer aspect of the world. She as a child was guided to believe in yourself and what you’re doing. Her dad lived out his musical dream. How can anyone tell her that a child of a dreamer it is not possible?

Strict playing is something she feels takes away from the art of music. She has a sultry raspy voice that is just intoxicating to listen too.  She has always tried to stray away from the structure. “Structured music scene is difficult when you enter a venue that is small or empty,” Siders feels. She goes on to discuss that when any musician is starting out they do to the various audience and by the time you have made the big house you have played to every kind of audience there is out there.  She wants to go with the flow. She never starts with a set list again there is no structure.

Jared Manker, “Mank” of Mank and Sass, is classically trained in music. He has the strict background insight into music. He assists her with the theory and structure of the songs.  Mank has a strong structure in music and is learning to enjoy the improv with her personality. His schooling allows for Siders to see where she is with her music and how to find her personal style of music.

She met her wife in high school here in Champaign, even though she was living in California. Her family often visited family in Champaign. She met her at a high school party. She fell in love with Erin Siders right off the bat. It took a journey to get together.  Between college and military, they stayed connected.  Eventually, Siders moved from Indianapolis to Champaign where she reconnected with Erin on Valentines Day 2012. They married in 2015. Siders does not understand the confusion over love.

She knows that even walking down the street she is not the pretty straight girl. Her mother was concerned with her moving to the midwest. Having grown up in California the comfortably being gay was not found in Indianapolis. She says, “There were many times I felt like the only gay person walking in the state.” Her philosophy is if she is the only gay person someone meets she wants that will be a great encounter. Be good to people.”

Siders influences to keep going is that it makes her heart happy. The work she did before this time there was no connection. This just makes her happy. Her father is so happy with what he does was a great lesson she learned. She grew up around good timeless music. Her musical inspirations include:

  • Janice Joplin
    • She said, “you got to give it to a woman who looks like she is going to pass out every time she is singing on stage.”
  • Ella Fitzgerald
    • “A truly amazing talent,” she says.
  • David Bowie
    • “You got to love Bowie. You got to love someone who can be himself,” Siders states.
  • Tina Turner
    • She said, “She is strong and a great achiever.”

Mornings are her favorite time of the day. She is a very early riser and makes her bed every day. It is a challenge at this time her wife works the graveyard shift, but she makes the bed when Erin gets up in the afternoon. It is a closing to the night and a beginning to the day. Makes the room a lot better. She enjoys a morning of songwriting and coffee.  She drinks at least a cup of coffee every day. She really loves coffee, mornings, and writing. Recently wrote More Than Caffeine.

As we finish our coffees she discusses her family and wife. How much they bring to her life. She has embraced the struggles she faced, stayed true to herself and continues to believe and dream.

She is releasing an album June 16, 2018 album on iTunes or message them on Facebook for T-shirts and a CD.

Things Return as They Were ~ Japanese Matcha Tea

Things Return as They Were ~ Japanese Matcha Tea

Japanese tea ceremony is a formal presentation.  The service is the winter presentation. This ceremony is preparing and presenting the matcha. This ceremony is centuries old and is about purification, harmony, respect, and tranquility.

Matcha Tea Leaves Preparation

This matcha is the highest grade of matcha specifically used for ceremonies. The flavor is a stronger umami. This blend of tea leaves specifically grown for the ceremony. The farmer covers the leaves shortly before harvest. This stimulates an increase in chlorophyll (increases the dark leaves) and amino acid (producing theanine). The handpicked leaves, only the highest grades of matcha are handpicked.  The leaves steaming prevents oxidation. The leaves are gently rolled, shaped, and dried (laying them flat to dry causes the leaves to crumble).  The leaves sorted by grade and slowly stone ground, watching the temperature of the stones hot stones causing a taste in the aroma. The Japanese matcha is a strong grassy flavor.

Sensei (先生), at the Japan House in Urbana, Illinois, discusses how the matcha  is fabulous for the skin. She says, “it is high in vitamin C. When you wake up tomorrow your skin will feel renewed.” There are many benefits of matcha tea the include:

  • Burning calories (high concentration of catechins)
  • Decrease cholesterol
  • Increase energy
  • Improves immune system
  • Boosts memory

This is great for a wonderful set of health and wellness benefits, but the ceremony is a connection to the person.

Matcha Tea Ceremony

The Japan House motto is,  “the Way of Tea,” representing nature, heaven, and earth. This service was a winter presentation. The mats are laid in the pattern that each guest sits and the hearth is low to bring more warmth to the room. The hostess and guests bow to each other. The ceremony develops for westerners who find the traditional floor sitting difficult.  A chabana, a beautiful flower arrangement sitting to the side. The seasonal arrangement represents winter This connects the room to nature.  There is a connection to water, earth, wood, fire, and metal with the utensils used for preparation.  This ceremony and ritual date back centuries with details being the key to the ceremony.

The ceremony is a stand and bow. This takes place at the beginning and end of the ceremony. The hostess presents each guest with a sweet. These handcrafted sweets are eaten just before the service. The sweet enhances the matcha flavor.

The matcha tea preparation is meticulous and precise movements. The master prepares each chawan (茶碗), bowl, of tea with as if conducting a beautiful symphony. The hostess delicately scoops the tea powder into a ceramic cup, pours hot water from a hot iron kettle into the cup with a long-handled ladle, and then mixes the powder and water together with a bamboo whisk to create a thick tea. The chawan are bowls that have one side that is more beautiful than the other. The hostess presents the tea with the prettiest side facing the guest. Prior to drinking the tea, the guest turns the bowl 90 degrees to face the prettiest side back to the hostess. The bowl presented during the ceremony is a painted flower blossom.

The ceremony is one of purification even down to the socks worn. Hakama, they are white and clean representative of purity. The cleansing of the equipment in front of the guests is not to clean, but to show purity. Respect as the guest receiving bowl with the hostess and when the tea bowls presented to them bow to the person seated next to them. This as if to say this is for you, and the guest replies with a bow as if saying no please you go ahead.

The tea is a beautiful vibrant green with a strong earthy flavor. This is a time for the guest to focus and stay in the moment. Each step of the ceremony requires a focus and concentration to the ritual. The ceremony ends with the utensils being cleaned and placed back as when the ceremony started.

Things all returned the way they were except us. The ceremony brings a deeper sense of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility changing us while all else remains the same.
