Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Dreamer and Believer ~ Sara Siders

Sitting in the local Champaign coffee shop, Cafe Kopi, with Sara Siders a musician, composer, and guitarist. She is a boundary pusher not only in her music but life. Sider’s is a transplant to the Champaign, Illinois music scene. Her strong sense of rock, blues, and funk to her performance and music.

Sara Siders is the lead singer for Mank and Sass, she grew up around the music world. Her father, Bruce Hall, is the lead bass guitarist for Reo Speedwagon.  Siders states, “My father has lived his dream so you cannot tell me that dreams do not come true.” Seeing her father’s happiness she learned that you can make anything happen.

Enjoying her childhood, staying out of the limelight most of the time. Siders recalls, “going on stage with the ‘fambamfamily’ to sing “Roll With The Changes”  As a child, she enjoyed pushing the boundaries. She says, “The joke is sports or jail for me.”

She enjoyed playing softball. She earned a place on the practice team on the Olympic Women’s softball team at the age of 15 she states, “I could not even drive myself to practice.” She earned a scholarship to Purdue for softball. This was a great opportunity for her, but her junior year her dream to play softball ended because of 5 knee surgeries.

The day she found out she was no longer able to play sports. She locks herself in her room. She was not sure what she was going to do with her life at this point. “School was not my forte.”  Her roommate, Matt Zimmerman, threw her a guitar and told her to figure it out. That was the first time she had taken an interest in music. She did figure out the guitar and that she could sing.

Sara Siders discusses how she has huge stage fright. She began singing with her back to the audience. To this day she still has stage fright. She is still trying to get over stage fright. She has recently made a choice to stop drinking and that has intensified the fear. Her approach now is singing with her eyes closed. Sometimes friends will come up to the stage and stand there for minutes before she realizes someone is there. The smaller intimate performances are much more frightening for Siders than the larger arenas. She states, “she feels like the intimate settings are more personal and come with expectations of more talking.” The expectation that she should tell her story about each song and the inspiration behind the music.

She has taken the challenge of facing a change in her dreams to figuring out a new passion and facing her own fears of performance to make her new dream come true.  She feels that the uncomfortably is present in her performance. She remembers even as a young child being coaxed to the stage to sing with her family. Her performances include music she composes as well as covers like My Neck My Back.

Sara Siders is also a music composer. The ability to hear the song and play songs, she believes is genetically inclined to her family. Siders is like her father in that there was no formal structural music training. She is able to write the lyrics and the music without the ability to read music. This gives her the believer and dreamer aspect of the world. She as a child was guided to believe in yourself and what you’re doing. Her dad lived out his musical dream. How can anyone tell her that a child of a dreamer it is not possible?

Strict playing is something she feels takes away from the art of music. She has a sultry raspy voice that is just intoxicating to listen too.  She has always tried to stray away from the structure. “Structured music scene is difficult when you enter a venue that is small or empty,” Siders feels. She goes on to discuss that when any musician is starting out they do to the various audience and by the time you have made the big house you have played to every kind of audience there is out there.  She wants to go with the flow. She never starts with a set list again there is no structure.

Jared Manker, “Mank” of Mank and Sass, is classically trained in music. He has the strict background insight into music. He assists her with the theory and structure of the songs.  Mank has a strong structure in music and is learning to enjoy the improv with her personality. His schooling allows for Siders to see where she is with her music and how to find her personal style of music.

She met her wife in high school here in Champaign, even though she was living in California. Her family often visited family in Champaign. She met her at a high school party. She fell in love with Erin Siders right off the bat. It took a journey to get together.  Between college and military, they stayed connected.  Eventually, Siders moved from Indianapolis to Champaign where she reconnected with Erin on Valentines Day 2012. They married in 2015. Siders does not understand the confusion over love.

She knows that even walking down the street she is not the pretty straight girl. Her mother was concerned with her moving to the midwest. Having grown up in California the comfortably being gay was not found in Indianapolis. She says, “There were many times I felt like the only gay person walking in the state.” Her philosophy is if she is the only gay person someone meets she wants that will be a great encounter. Be good to people.”

Siders influences to keep going is that it makes her heart happy. The work she did before this time there was no connection. This just makes her happy. Her father is so happy with what he does was a great lesson she learned. She grew up around good timeless music. Her musical inspirations include:

  • Janice Joplin
    • She said, “you got to give it to a woman who looks like she is going to pass out every time she is singing on stage.”
  • Ella Fitzgerald
    • “A truly amazing talent,” she says.
  • David Bowie
    • “You got to love Bowie. You got to love someone who can be himself,” Siders states.
  • Tina Turner
    • She said, “She is strong and a great achiever.”

Mornings are her favorite time of the day. She is a very early riser and makes her bed every day. It is a challenge at this time her wife works the graveyard shift, but she makes the bed when Erin gets up in the afternoon. It is a closing to the night and a beginning to the day. Makes the room a lot better. She enjoys a morning of songwriting and coffee.  She drinks at least a cup of coffee every day. She really loves coffee, mornings, and writing. Recently wrote More Than Caffeine.

As we finish our coffees she discusses her family and wife. How much they bring to her life. She has embraced the struggles she faced, stayed true to herself and continues to believe and dream.

She is releasing an album June 16, 2018 album on iTunes or message them on Facebook for T-shirts and a CD.

Persistance to Look Forward ~ Jackson Thomas Carey

Persistance to Look Forward ~ Jackson Thomas Carey

Jackson Thomas Carey, the producer at The Motive Productions, brings beats to the world of music. Carey began musical training as a young child and quickly found recreating the musical sounds rewarding. His motivation to continue forward with focus and perseverance.

Jackson Thomas Carey The Motive Productions
The Motive Productions

His musical training directed him to the world of recreating musical instruments a true talent. Carey took his raw talent to these creations. His motivation lead him to work in studios as an intern. He was able to learn and grow his raw talent. This training and talent lead to recreating instrumentals for hip hop. He starts with the beat and layers with synthesizers and drums.

Carey believes that perseverance is the key to success with everything. Knowledge of a better life and a stronger future makes this possible. Knowing a real low point in life makes perseverance steadfastness in doing something despite delaying success.

He knows real struggles and low points in life. Five years ago he began a spiral down with the use of opioid pain pills prescriptions from other people’s scripts. His drug use turned from use of other’s prescriptions to heroin. This turn moved him to a time of selfishness and a life of blinders, not seeing the big picture. He looked only for his next fix and that was the focus of his life. Took his drug abuse to overdosing several times.

Soon Carey released that he was being selfish with his drug use.  The journey to take back his life he realized that he was really being a baby about life. That his expectation in life was other’s were to help and do for him. He took the time to conclude he wanted to be a man.

Support came from his family. They took the time to love him but remained strict with their expectations and rules. This turn allowed for Carey to turn the switch back on. He started to see the way and the light.

Jackson Thomas Carey The Motive Production Best Way to Health
Jackson Thomas Carey

This time he really is excited about the person he is. This discovery came through self-discovery. Many close to him are seeing his true self-return again.  The most important message for him is that he needed to do this for himself. “Drug use is very focused on the moment, the now, Carey says. He learned that he lost a huge chunk of time.”

“Time is rare,” Carey states, “As a child time has no meaning. As an adult time is precious and how much it takes each day to get everything done.” His favorite hip-hop artists include A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. His interest and talent returned with the new direction and focus in his life. He is again creating beats for musicians. This business started with interest from hip-hop artists hearing his beats and purchasing them.

Carey starts each day with plenty of water and a to-do list. His list consists of ten items to focus on. His works to complete each item each day. He will allow one item to move forward if necessary, but this allows him the motivation to stay focused and persevere.

Cheers to Art Basel Miami ~ Daniel Chimowitz

Cheers to Art Basel Miami ~ Daniel Chimowitz

In writing this article, I first found myself repeating what I wrote last year. I guess I really want you to understand how much I love being amongst fellow artists, art enthusiasts, and art. So instead of reiterating my love of Art Basel Miami, I am here to tell you which of the art I would want to rip off the wall and take home with me …AND to take you on a journey to the party splendor that glows within Art Basel Miami.

erro-god-bless-bagdad Art Basil 4Chion Lifestyle

In this concentrated sea of art, there is a hope that just around the corner displays a heart-stopping piece from one of my favorite artists or something new and amazing. I found 3 needles and a pair of shoes in this haystack of art.

Jean Dubuffet, The painter of all time. I dropped my jaw when I saw his paintings on the wall of the Landau Fine Art salon. Not only was I blown away by their beauty, I was shocked to see them in front of me, here at Art Basel, in Miami, when Jean Dubuffet worked diligently to keep many of his paintings together in his own Foundation in France, the Dubuffet Foundation. I went into a dreamlike state. I feel connected. His abstract lines and images appeal to the inner workings of my infamous crazy mind. It is as if Dubuffet was looking deep within me to calm me with the warmth of his pastels and deep-set figures. He is self-taught, famous within is home, France, and abroad. Cheers, Art Basel! For providing a venue where I can indulge in the art that I wouldn’t fathom seeing on the beach of Miami, and here I can go up to art and take a selfie, something impossible to do at his museum in Paris.

landau-fine-art-2-Art Basel 4Chion lifestyle

Erró, a famed artist from Iceland, took center stage at the Convention Center.  In the U.S. we would call him a pop artist, taking what’s current and displaying it in an art form. His rendition of the war in the Middle East is definitely eye-catching. Lots of detail and strong imagery. I could have looked at it for hours, finding many hidden meanings among the paint. This Erró is all in grayscale, which makes it move thick and slow in my veins. For this visceral feeling, I have nominated to be amongst the greatest on my living room wall, though, because of the dark imagery my partner would sequester it into my studio. I can be inspired by it there, no problem. Who wants to gift this to my man cave?

The 3rd needle I found requires a jackhammer or just your average crowbar for me to take the art home. Chanoir is one of my favorite street artists. Again, Cheers, Art Basel! This time for Wynnwood, the place to see Street Art in all of its glory. Chanoir is living room approved! I love the never-ending use of color and happiness in his art. Looking on the walls he canvases, I feel the sugar rush from eating my imaginary bowl of everything I love that is filled with everything that is (quote) “bad” for you. Since I can’t quite take an original like this home with me, I can at least Like his Facebook page…and so can you: https://www.facebook.com/chanoir1980/

Now on to the festivities…

My shoes, yes my shoes always get more attention than anything else I’m wearing. That’s because I’m obsessed with Jeremy Scott’s designs, his are the only shoes I’ve worn for the last 3 years, minus a pair of Italian driving loafers. He is one of my favorite designers of all time, Alexander McQueen of course is my absolute favorite, but I will never meet him, unfortunately. So attending the Jeremy Scott party was The Highlight of my Basel (yes, I just possessed “Basel”).  It begins to rain les chats et les chiens as I saunter in with my Go for Gold with Latest Wings 3.0. The rain cleared the dance floor. The DJ didn’t stop and someone covers him so the party can go on! I take cover quickly and realize that I’m right next to Mr. Jeremy Scott. We take a photo, chat about his awesome work, and then about 25 of us flood the stage and dance in the rain. The staff is freaking, people are jumping in the pool. I’m freaking the stage and feeling thankful again. This time for Swarovski for making a mobile phone attachment that makes my photo of Jeremy Scott so dreamy.

mickey-js-party Art Basel 4Chion Lifestyle

Another memorable event was the Ducati’s Scrambler party. I didn’t bring my Italian driving loafers to Miami this year, but I could smell the tasty Italian leather as I walked past a line of Lamborghinis outside the hotel, they were of all shapes and colors. One was painted in slated gold camouflage. [insert whistle] The attendees were beyond well dressed, Italy’s finest. Everyone I met could be a friend for life. Not sure why I’m mentioning this, maybe just to give you another side of Art Basel, or to keep the memory alive. Moving on…

Art Gaysel, definitely an honorable mention. It’s my fourth year at Art Basel and this year was the first that I found the subsection. Throughout Art Basel there seems to be something for everyone. I felt at home at the Hotel Gaythering’s Art Gaysel, back in the Castro in San Francisco where I grew up in the LGBT community. This painting is the only one that didn’t have a cock on it. Cheers!

Daniel Chimowitz Art Hearts Fashion Week

This year we are partnering with Nevow fashion design for the La Jolla Fashion Film Festival. Daniel Chimowitz, Nevow’s designer, designs Saturday evening red carpet gown. Artist Chimowitz creates walking canvases of painted textiles and upcycled clothing.

Daniel Chimowitz Artist

He is a mix medium artist, an American Fashion and Textile Designer. His intent is bringing art from Galleries and Museums to the street, as a form of Walking Art.

Chimowitz is also known for his painted prints and photography. This will be a perfect look for this fashion film festival. His intent is to bring art from Galleries and Museums to the street, as a form of Walking Art.

Daniel Chimowitz Childhood

Born of Lesbians in London but raised in San Francisco, Chimowitzspent many summers in Europe, mainly London and the Basque Country in Spain. He was exposed to the 70’s & 80’s London punk scene along with the flashier men’s style of the Matadors. His second mother is Tlingit, a Native American from Alaska under the Inuit umbrella of cultural influence. At home he was surrounded by Inuit imagery; the simple lines of the Inuit art are calming and the detail stood out more than any other art he studied.

Chimowitz was raised among the LGBT community, a child of The Castro, which shapes his ideas of fashion and the use of colors and imagery. In his textiles, colors are combined with the punk DIY fashion of London, studs from Spain, and simplistic triangles and circles as the focal point.

Daniel Chimowitz Fashion

Chimowitz has studied fashion across cultures and time, and strives to give men a chance to feel like an Emperor and for women to be the Empress.

Grande arrives on the red carpet wearing Alexander McQueen white wide leg pants with a Sarrieri Half Cup Demi vintage bustier lace top. The season’s trend is adding that vintage period piece to your modern styling. This piece is a great choice adding sweet romance to the evening. The shoe for the evening is Ruthie Davis Cara Boots. This is perfect as the red carpet is damp from the rain.

Her make-up for the red carpet is simple neutrals with a bold matted purple lip. The jewelry designed by Irit Design. A perfect high ponytail (her signature hair) is a nice touch to the simple styling for the red carpet. Grande presents a great style with a strong confidence on the red carpet.

Grande’s style changed from the sweet romance to the sexy jungle for her performance of “Side of Side” from her “Dangerous Woman” album. This performance with Nicki Minaj included half-naked backup dancers.

She kept the high ponytail wrapped with a Maxior hair gold cuff. Her outfit was a one-shoulder leaf printed crop top and mini skirt. This is custom design is from Baja East. The fish net stockings complete the sexy jungle. This styling added a strong sex appeal to Grande’s performance of sexual equality of bump and grind.

The night closes with Grande receiving Artist of The Year. She kept with the red carpet styling theme. She added a vintage piece with her jewelry. Her sweet earrings and necklace from Doves by Doron Paloma are a classic timeless feel.

She wears a black crop top designed by Derek Lam. Her slouchy white pants designer Proenza Schouler. The pants have a flared bottom, but the top featured a wrap-around effect. She wears the same boots from the red carpet.

Her hair remained in her well-known high pony tailed wrapped in black. Grande’s makeup was the neutrals with a bold matted lip.

Grande dedicates the award to her fans. She thanks her fans for their continued support of her music and career. Her grandmother Marjorie Grande joins her for the award-winning evening. Congrats Ariana Grande on a successful evening.

Elsbeth is her favorite character to date. She says, “She allowed for me to be creative. She is not like anyone else on television, a character that is unexpected. She is the joker in the deck. When I saw her on the page I saw how I could make it work. It was a creative challenge.”
