Alicia Machado graces the red carpet with her beauty in a gold form-fitting gown at the Metropolitan Fashion Week at Warner Brother Studios Saturday evening. She brings a bright smile and personality to the event. She becomes the spotlight of the media and is surrounded.
She recently became the forefront of the presidential campaign. When Hillary Clinton’s campaign released the details of being Miss Universe 1996. She took a lot slack at that time from Donald Trump. The difficult days were not as easy as she faced much criticism. The woman she is today brought forward her strength as one who stands tall and one has learned a lot about the beautiful woman she is inside and out.
Alicia stands with great strength and courage as she addresses the press on the blue carpet. She takes a moment to thank all those who support her throughout this time. She said, “I love you all, I love you all and thank you very much for all the people who are supporting me right now.”
Alicia’s daughter, Dinorah Valentina Hernandez, walks the red carpet for designer Ricardo Soltero. This dress is a soft pink with gold trim on the bottom. Her styling is soft with pink roses adorning her head. She enjoyed her moment on the runway.
Her mother, Alicia, did not let the controversy stop her daughter from walking the runway for the day. She faces the controversy with firmness and a bright smile. The lesson for her daughter and many at the event is to keep moving one foot in front of the other. Demonstrating that life continues and we move forward.
One year ago she was working the challenges on America’s Next Top Models (ANTM). Capra’s dream was to appear on ANTM and work the runway. There was a height requirement in seasons past. She was just a little shy of the requirement until the last season. Tyra Banks saw something in the 5’5′ Capra.
Capra works hard and focuses on the challenges on ANTM. She has a major look change and takes it in stride because this is her dream. She gains a following that loves to seeing this young model make her dreams come true. This experience is a fabulous opportunity for Capra. It is heartbreaking for viewers when her time ended too soon on ANTM.
Capra continues to focus on her goal of modeling and makes it very successful. Capra says, “I turned to my faith, family, and good friends to pick myself up. I learned a lot about myself and modeling. I knew this was my dream and I love the work.”
Capra has done just that. She graces the runways, cover of magazines, red carpets and more. She commands the runway as if she is taller than life. Her runway shows have include Art Hearts Fashion Week, Metropolitan Fashion Week, LA Swim Week, and more. She is often referred to as the flower Child Virgin and her flower brand, “Bloom by Ava.”
Her mother, Ann Marie Capra, states, “Ava has worked hard to stay focused, true to herself, and is making her dream come true.” Her mother states it best. Capra during the last year after leaving ANTM accomplishes a lot. Tyra Banks saw something in Capra, but Capra continues to shows that something special. She brings a strong determination to fashion, runway, commercial, and beauty making her dreams come true.
Malan Breton, a fashion designer, brings a story in three chapters for fall-winter 2017. The chapters create a story that flows from New York Fashion Week, to London Fashion Week, and concludes in Los Angeles at Style Fashion Week. The collection brings a complete story from the chapters: Everywhere at the End of Time (New York), Living in the Moment in Fear (London), and Seven Deadly Sins (Los Angels).
The New York chapter is Everywhere at the End of Time. This chaptertakes us to the current times in the world now and brings about empowerment. Empowering women and those beingpoorly treated. The entire show from the dancers, to the opening model, Nykhor Paul bring the story to life.
The runway included celebrities models: Kiera Chaplin (Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter), Frankie Grande, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Dylan Grieco, Mason Grammer, and Janine Tugonon. Each is a part is the weaving of the story about acceptance and hope.
London’s show at Freemasons Hall continues the collections’ story. This chapter is living in the current time of fear and darkness. Taking the color away from you. The loss of color a strong presence on the runway. The opening fabric for this chapter looks like a second skin. The music for the runway is Sleepwalk by Santo & Johnny.
Los Angeles story chapter, the Seven Deadly Sins. This runway brings the story back to hope, light, and empowerment with the use of color. The Phoenix in the triplet chapter story.
The collections’ stories inspiration is the 1930s, the loss of hope and death. The stories draw from Charlie Chaplin‘s 1930 films including City Lights and Modern Times. The collections present the story with perfection in fabrics, treatments, performances, and colors.
The fabrics are Asian inspired. The fabrics are organzas, silk Charmeuse, and recycled piettes. The piettes created from recycled aluminum cans. Breton uses a company in Twain that cuts, colors, and treats the metal.
Breton says, “I do my best to protect the environment when creating my designs.” This metallic dress moments and texture are extraordinary. Breton states, “the dress movement comes from the way I weighted and draped the dress. I am so grateful it turned out so well.”
The color in this chapter is green (earth and rebirth), gold (prosperity and richness), and deep blue (continuous flow of life). The floral prints brings beauty and a new beginning to the final chapter of the story.
Breton’s chapters stay true to his aesthetics elegance. The men’s silhouettes are very on point. This collection Breton styled and designed himself. His stylist for several seasons, Montgomery Frazier The Image Guru, said, “we do not put anyone in anything that is ill-fitting. If it is ill-fitted they do not wear it. The textures and fabrics fit Breton’s catch line ‘wherever you go shine.’ The fabrics are rich, opulent, exquisite tailoring, and he is about fashion. Being here with Breton is so glamorous at Style Fashion Week with the beautiful outdoor setting and jazz music.”
Breton develops his menswear after his own experience. He states, “when I was a ballet dancer in London and on Broadway every time I lifted my arm up when wearing a suit I would lose part of my sleeve. I knew I had to figure out how to cut a suit so I do not lose part of my sleeve. I trained at Turnbull And Asser, the suit makers for the Prince of Wales. He says, “I incorporate the English traditions in my designs. I learned there with my development for the men’s suits.”
The fashion show stayed true to the designers’ aesthetic while completing the story started in New York. The beauty, tailoring, and signature detailing tell the story of hope, equality, and empowerment. Concluding with the image of renewing and shining wherever you are.
Robots, World Premiere at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival, gives us insight to their award-winning film. This film awarded Best Directors for Josh Brandåo and Nicolai Kornum. This film provides an insight into the blurred world of technology and human emotions that are fluid between humans and droids.
How does this film connect to fashion?
“Robots” is an editorial style fashion film, which involves 6 primary designers, we invited them to take part in the project. The film uses fashion items creating the universe. This gives it a special aesthetic look, i.e. using close-ups of fashion items as doorways or buildings etc. We incorporate fashion with makeup and body painting for the characters’ look and use fashion accessories as props and plot points. This unique world creates the background for our story taking a critical look at our relationship with modern technology: smartphones and social media.
How does location play into the subconscious side of the human affections?
It might not play a big part in life, locations seem to disappear around us when our eyes become distracted and affected by an object or subject. Using film language, however, there is an option to create places and surroundings to build the atmosphere and mood of the characters to convey their feelings. This develops a subconscious level to an audience, which opens up many possibilities.
What is the one thing you do each day to make it successful?
Drink coffee in the morning.
What is your background in film and direction?
We have together made several fashion films over the last 6 years that have won several awards at festivals. We develop, produce, and finish the projects together from our photographic studio based in London.
Josh Brandao has a Master’s Degree in Fashion Photography from London College of Fashion and a degree in Moving Image and Performance Design from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Nicolai Kornum worked for 8 years as a First Assistant Director in Feature Films, Commercials, and TV-Drama and trained at the European Film College in Directing and Editing.
When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?
Most of the fashion films we create are usually editorial fashion films showcasing several designers in the same way as a magazine editorial and are not an advertising for one specific brand. This means we have greater creative freedom but the budgets are lower, which makes short films ideal.
The short film format fits well for our stories and ideas, and is perfect for online distribution and showcasing at international festivals at this stage in our carriers.
This film takes on a message outside of the actual robot being the robot in the film. How was this juxtaposition developed?
We think it’s interesting how today we have become so attached to the great technology. We have the available in the palm of our hands that we seem more and more living inside the world of our smartphones and computers, perhaps neglecting what’s around us too. Of course, technology is important and has opened up a whole new world of possibilities and interactions.
In Robots, we tried to blur the lines between the humans and machines, playing with inverting the roles, both in the sense of making humans more like robots and giving actual robots human emotions.
What are the other locations is this film will be screening?
The La Jolla Fashion Film Festival in San Diego, California is Robots world premiere. From there we will be screening the film in the International Fashion Film Festival circuit. Our next stop is the Miami Fashion Film Festival.
This film uses fashion to create the sensory experience of reality and machines being difficult to differentiate between. This creates a conversation about this reality as a real possibility in the near future with the complex development of machines.
A side note, we enjoyed the directors fun stylish suits worn on the red carpet.

The Golden Globes starts award season each year with exceptional fashion, food, and entertainment. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association honors the best in film and television at the 74th annual ceremony. This year’s red carpet, dinner, award show, and after parties did not disappoint.
Many gracing the red carpet turn to a stylist to put the entire look together. “The stylist’s job is to bring all looks together that the team has envisioned for the celebrity.” (GabrielLangenbrunner). Gabriel styles Egith van Dinther, rising Dutch model, for the Golden Globes red carpet look. The soft romantic style is a beautiful look for the red carpet.
Red carpet fashion was a variety of gowns, pantsuits, tuxedos, and designers. This year was the year of the beard for men. The gowns were traditional, classic, and the first couture gown. The fashion was colorful with yellow being a strong presence for the evening.
The night held some great classics, new modern twists, and setting the tone for award season. The evening was fabulous from the red carpet to after parties.
Antonella A Commatteo, the designer of Commatteo, takes the runway wearing an asymmetrical top with a peek-a-boo short underneath. The attention to her personal style concludes the runway with a strong influence line created in the collection. Lines bring this collection a perspective that creates a personal fashion statement.
The line creation for some dresses uses a slit to create a movement that is unique to the dress. The ability to vent the dress around provides a revealing sexy appeal in the movement. Taking the dart off the gown brings a free flow movement to the gown.
The empire waistline silhouette fits the bodice, but here is designed without the normally gathered skirt. The long loose flow provides more volume to the gown and places emphasizes on the bust line. The use of lines in different directions and angles provides a visual dimension and depth to the collection.
The front of Ava Capra’s, model, dress as well as the gown was worn by Sibley Scoles, E! News Correspondent, creates a line with the placement of the geometric shapes. The back of Capra’s dress is sheer black. Continuing with the revelation of sensuality. The pleat lines below the waist provide a voluminous flow.
The dress worn by Capra the collar gives the illusion that it continues down the back. When the model turns around you see that the collar is round. Scoles’ dress uses a combination of traditional collars and necklines to create the height and depth. The various necklines in the collection combine traditional collars and neckline to create new shapes, dimensions, and illusions.
“The runway makeup styling is natural especially the brow. We are going to see more natural brows this spring.” (Alejandra Barraza, TNT Agency) “The hair is soft waves with a little curl. This summer season does not forget the sunscreen for your hair.” (Maily O’Neil, Mai Salon El Paseo). The styling was slightly individualized with each look.
Heather Larose, singer-songwriter, and Meredith O’Connor, singer, and Anti-bullying activist, took the runway with a performance. They present messages about the ability to express individuality without bullying.
Commatteo states, “My inspiration for all my collections has always stemmed from my life’s journey. This part of my life was reaching the professional, ageless female, who loves fashion, constantly on the run, needing a mix and match pieces to change from day to evening.” The collection brings the ability for self-expression with the ability to combine pieces and use the lines for accentuating. The fall-winter 2017 collection brings self-expression to the forefront with elegance and beauty. See the full collection here.
