Unlikely Friends ~ “Slipaway”

Unlikely Friends ~ “Slipaway”

Husband and wife, Julia Butler, and Daniel Mentz, presents Slipaway at Prescott Film Festival. The most unlikely duo becomes the best of friends on a self-discovery journey.

Slipaway Film

The film takes two different generations and puts them together at a time when their lives are struggling. They must overcome their differences in age, personality, and more. The journey takes them to becoming best friends while supporting each other’s dreams.

The script develops from Mentz’s visit with Gwen Davis, author. He personally delivers a keyboard he sold to her on Craigslist. The visit became an all day adventure with cookies, tea, and scrapbooks. She told stories about hanging out on location with the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Cary Grant. Butler developed the screenplay after an evening of Mentz regaling the day’s adventures. She is inspired by Davis’ stories and life.

Slipaway Message

Mentz states, “We wanted to bring this message to the foreground, that relationships whether romantic or platonic do not have to be in the same age category. Relationships in different generations are not really discussed.” The movie takes on generational struggles and friendships that assist with making dreams come true.

Fall, actress Elaine Partnow

Fall, actress Elaine Partnow, brings a lot to the role. Mentz says, “She brought the character to life much more than we could ever imagine.” Partnow brings Fall to life with details that are specific to Fall’s her generation. Partnow presents the need to be private and dressing up before leaving the house. Just a few details Partnow presents throughout the film that bring her generation to light.

Adam, actor Jesse Pepe

Adam, actor Jesse Pepe, presents with his own story and struggle from the start. His past is still very present. This takes precedence over Adam and Fall’s individual dreams. Adam was not onboard with Fall’s concept of dreaming in life,

Adam: “It’s a little cheesy, don’t you think?”

Fall: “Cheesy? Well, guess that means my whole life has been… cheesy.”

Mentz and Butler’s first feature film brings an unlikely pair together that takes you on a lifetime journey of self-discovery, laughter, and dreams.

Juice from 2 limes
Pink Himalayan Salt, to taste
4 4.0 oz Sea Base filets
1 1/2 tablespoon extra-virgin or coconut oil
salt, to taste
1 sprig of fresh thyme
1 cup dried quinoa
2 cups water

What You’ll Need To Know

Combine 1 cup quinoa with 2 cups water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer until quinoa is tender, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and let is sit for 5 minutes. After it has cooked and rested, use a fork to fluff and separate the grains.

Season the sea bass with salt and pepper.

In a large saute pan over medium heat, add the coconut oil and heat the oil to a slight smoke. Add 1 sprig of fresh thyme to the saute pan and sear the sea bass skin side down for 3/4 of the cooking time about 7 minutes. This will give the fish a nice crisp skin and golden color. Carefully turn the fish over, to finish the other side. Remove the sea bass and hold in a warm place.

In a mixing bowl, add the diced mango, purple onion, cilantro, tomatoes, jalapeño, lime juice and salt and mix together.

Plate your ingredients with 1/2 cup cooked quinoa, sea bass and mango salsa on top (roughly, 1/4 cup.)

Amanda Marsh, the wife to firefighter Eric Marsh, joined the cast and crew this evening. She has made her message strong and proud in honor of the husband she lost. She has taken her pain and turned it to helping others. She created the Eric Marsh Foundation for Wildland Firefighters. This foundation provides assistance with, “heartbreak at its deepest level, and we have the ability and resources to help others dealing with the same loss and trauma” (Eric Marsh Foundation Website). This year our country is experiencing a loss of over 2 million acres due to wildland fires.  This film brings forward the battle and struggles these families and firefighters face to protect our homes, families, and wildlands.

Only The Brave Phoenix Premiere 4Chion Lifestyle

Tonight the premiere brought Hollywood actors to the Phoenix red carpet. They came to honor these men and to bring awareness to the struggles living their live fighting fires. Josh Brolin, his character is Eric Marsh in the film, in a behind the scenes clip states, “there should be a moment when the audience is educated on how tough it is to be a wildland firefighter.” The firefighters live in the most rugged conditions for weeks. They carry 40-50 lbs packs with their water, meals ready to eat, sleeping gear, and shower infrequently.

Miles Teller, his character is Donut in the film, says, “These guys go all over the country for two weeks at a time. They go home for two days to return for two more weeks. They do this for six to eight months each year. They work their butts off.”  The sacrifice these firefighters and their families make to protect our livelihoods.

Joseph Kosinski, film’s director, wanted to bring the vision to this film “that you do not need to carry a gun to be a hero. What firefighters do. That it is a war a war against mother nature. It felt grounded and real,” he states behind the scenes. This film brings this story to the scene. Eric Marsh brought this municipal firehouse to a Type 1 Crew hotshots.

Filming was in Santa Fé New Mexico for most of the film. The Yarnell part filmed last. James Dale Badge stated this evening, “We filmed Yarnell last. At that moment we had to trust that it was in us as actors. This is our job.” The film’s song, Hold the Light, is by Dierks Bentley, who grew up in Phoenix.  The sacrifice made by many to protect our wildlands, communities, and livelihood presents in this film. This film opens in theaters October 20, 2017. Check your local listing for times and tickets.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Fashion, Pop Culture, and Film ~ Habana 3 A.M.

Habana 3 A.M. with the character Max Vogue premieres at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival. This fashion film was the first fashion film to film in Cuba. This film creates a fashion journey with drama, adventure, and culture. Director Antonio Contreras Aviance takes a moment to discuss this history-making fashion film.

Antonio Contreras Aviance Director Performing at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival
Antonio Contreras Aviance Performance at La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

  • What makes this a fashion film?

Fashion is what inspired the main character of this film, Max Vogue. He is an angst-ridden fashion superhero who seeks for the truth.

  • How does location play into the screenplay of the film?

I had in mind filming in Cuba to capture the glamour and luxury. Cuba provided a perfect backdrop for the 1950s and juxtapose the traditions. The mysticism and folklore of Cuba. The location of the film gave birth to the film’s title Habana 3 A.M.

  • What is your background in film and direction?

I am a plastic artist, fashion historian and film enthusiast. I grew up watching Mexican Golden Age of Cinema films. Later I developed a love for the Italian neo-realism. My formal education was in the films of David Lynch, Almodovar, John Waters, Gus Van Sant among others. When I direct, produce, the film is my canvas.

La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet LJFFF 4Chion Lifestyle
Habana 3 AM La Jolla Fashion Film Festival Red Carpet

  • This fashion film had the opportunity to film Cuba. What were some of the struggles and benefits of filming at this location?

In Cuba, people have a way of making things out of nothing, and that seems to work in a very surreal way. If you try to do things the way you are used to, you will fail but if you surrender to the forces of the supernatural you might have a chance. My cameras did not work and the location I had a permit for filming was closed for renovation.

Suddenly a priestess of Santeria, a mystical Afro-Cuban tradition, opened her doors to my cameras and brought with her an entire Cuban cast. This cast was willing to participate in my film. The cameras worked thanks to a very creative cameraman who knew how to read Chinese (the only language that the camera directions had). Then the filming finished in 5 days.

Habana 3am La Jolla Fashion Film Festival 4Chion Lifestyle -10
Habana 3 A.M. La Jolla Fashion Film Festival

  • When creating this film what was the advantage of being a short film?

The advantage to creating a short film is being able to intrigue a lot of people with a little dose of fashion, music, luxury, and folklore. I did not have to explain more, and that is always a good thing, “Leave before you are left.”

  • What is the back-story to creating animation?

Yes, if you want to know what happened to Max Vogue after his Cuba trip, you will find out in the animated comic. Max is pushed down the stairs after winning an award, and then he goes into an “Alice in Wonderland” type of experience. He is able to travel through time and meet his icons such as Dali, Kahlo, Hemingway, Schiaparelli etc.

Max in the comic educates and amuses about fashion history, pop culture, and art. Did you know: Yves Saint Laurent was in a mental institution for a while, Thierry Mugler was an architect and photographer, Coco Chanel spent her childhood in an adoption center and never was adopted, and Alexander McQueen had planned to commit suicide in front of a live audience? All these mysteries Max will reveal during the upcoming episodes.

·       What other locations this film will be screening?

The film will show in South Africa, this is the 5th edition in 2018. I am a regular guest at the festival. This is the location I met the designer Hendrik Vermuelen she designed the gowns for Habana 3 A.M. The festival of Havana in Cuba, a digital library. They will put the film in their digital library honoring the first fashion short filmed in Cuba.

Habana 3 A.M. received the International Fashion Film Award Best Jewelry to PK Bijoux. Her couture jewelry is the last piece you want to take off. The fashion film drama brings fun, history, and culture to the screenplay.

Capturing the early days of the 1950 and 1960s with personal clips brings laughter to the audience at PFF. His work with Dean Martin, a partnership develops after bar incident, capture the gentleman and childhood fun. When this partnership comes to an end, Lewis took on a new direction.

He steps into behind the scenes role of filmmaking. Lewis takes time to learn all areas of filmmaking: directing, acting, camera, and production. His films included The Bellboy,  The Ladies Manand much more.

Lewis took direction and acting to a serious  level by creating “Jerry’s Noisy Toy.” This invention changed filmmaking forever. His ability to frame a film, create films years ahead of their time, and direction of this film is groundbreaking. He states, “If you think talking to me is easy, you’re crazy,” about directing himself.

The personal interviews with Sean Hayes, an actor who played Lewis a TV biopic, Pierre Etaix, a French clown, and Martin Scorsese are personal. The interview brings complexity to the clown face. Lewis was not only an American comedian but internationally honored as an extraordinary filmmaker. Monro’s film shows Lewis as many Americans see him, the childhood comedian, and the international view, an exceptional filmmaker.

Often misunderstood and criticized for his work, but he brings brilliance to entertainment with laughter, art, and innovation to film. Lewis says, “If you give love to your audience they will give it back.”He was always a child. Lewis states, “I have always been 5.” You could see this in his comedy personality.

Lewis, a humanitarian, actor, comedian, influence in film, a child, and man is in this film. He never lost his childhood spirit. This brought pleasure to his audiences enjoying his films.

Grief and Loss ~ “The Visit” a Film By Romina Schwedler

Grief and Loss ~ “The Visit” a Film By Romina Schwedler

Romina Schwedler, screenwriter and director, presents her first filmThe Visit, at Prescott Film Festival. This short film is a juxtaposition on life events.

The Visit is a day in the time of a visit with a mother (June Squibb) and son (Sean Maher). The story takes a specific moment in time during the son’s life and develops a sequence of events that change lives. The son must face the consequences of the events.

Schwedler’s attention to details in the film completes the story. She states, “every little detail, in the lighting, the wardrobe design, and every odd thing matters.” The juxtaposition of this story develops well with the attention to details.

Schwedler develops the story from a conversation she had with her father concerning her aunt. Her aunt experiences loss of most family and friends. Coping with the deep grief and loss her aunt develops elaborate stories about those she lost. Her techniques in film development here allow the audience to experience the emotions in the story.

The casting for the short film was “serendipitous,” she says. She approaches June Squibb, Oscar-nominated actress, at an award dinner in Los Angeles with a flash drive of the script. Sean Maher, Ben in the short film, heard about the project and appreciates June Squibb’s work. His agent contacted Schwedle in regards to working on the project.  The casting provides a twist much like the film. Check local film festival events for screening.
