The Best Picture at the 91st Oscars® is Green Book. This story brings forward the fact that we need to sit down and discuss racism in a safe environment.
Green Book Producers
Jim Burke is a producer and actor, known for Green Book (2018), The Descendants(2011) and Election (1999). This film took many puns and knocks during production. Burke responds to this time, “I’ll just say, yes, it was discouraging; but we always went back to the film. And when we had a bad day, we’d pop in the movie, and we were reminded that we’re all really proud of this film, all of us and all of the over 500 people who helped make it.”
Peter Farrell is a producer and writer, known for Green Book (2018), There’s Something About Mary (1998) and Dumb and Dumber (1994). Farrell talks about his approach to winning, “It’s like if I watch a football game and I need my team to score, I just leave the room, and they will. If I’m watching them, they won’t. So I just kind of thought about everything but winning this thing, and it worked.”
Charles B. Wessler is known for his work on There’s Something About Mary (1998), Dumb and Dumber (1994) and It’s Pat: The Movie (1994). Wessler talks about the moment Julia Roberts (he did forget her name) announced Green Book for Best Picture, “I just want to say one thing. These guys may or may not agree with me, but when I’m forgetting the name of the actress who gave us the award. I don’t know why.” Burke states, “Julia Roberts.” Wessler continues, “Julia Roberts. She opened up thank you. She opened up the thing, and I’m not kidding, I started to talk to my friend sitting next to me; and she said GREEN BOOK, and I so just to let you know, were we thinking we could win? I kind of forgot that we could, and, you know.”
Film Synopsis
The title and subject matter are a reference to “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” also known as “The Negro Travelers’ Green Book.” Published from 1936-1966, the guide helped African-American travelers find lodging, restaurants, and other businesses that would serve them. It eventually covered most of North America, plus Bermuda and the Caribbean. (IMDB)

This film is a celebration of love and a reminder of the struggles facing many African American women in this country. Regina King envelopes this struggle and love to win the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress.
Actress in a Supporting Role
Regina King brings her mother to the Oscars®. She says about her mother being there, “I feel like kind of like one of those full circle moments because so much of the character Sharon Rivers was mapped or inspired by my mother and my grandmother.” She gets teary-eyed as she reflects and says thanks to these women.
She goes on to say, ” James Baldwin birthed this baby and Barry, you nurtured her, you surrounded her with so much love and support, so it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone.” That is truly was. She is wearing an Oscar® winning Oscar De La Renta white gown.
This film is important in the narrative that there remains a divide in this country. We have moved forward and backward throughout the 400 years since the first slave being brought to this country. King states about winning, “But it’s just a reminder of when Hattie McDaniel won. She didn’t win just because black people voted for her. She won because she gave an amazing performance.”
King did present a strong woman fighting for her family and her dreams. Kings said about working on the film, “When you have men and women working together, pretty amazing things happen.”
She continues with, “I feel like I’ve had so many women that have paved the way, are paving the way, and I feel like I walk in their light, and I also am creating my own light.”

Breakfast is the best meal of the day. You can enjoy it all day savory or sweet. Breatkfast time is a great time to gather and enjoy.
Cameron Trading Post
The food made from scratch daily and is a fusion of the three food cultures. This place is perfect for travelers with their lodging, restaurant, art gallery, garden with fountains, and a massive gift shop. The trading post opened in 1916 and welcomes everyone like a guest in their homes. Prior to being a trading post, the place served as an apothecary.

Prickly pear stuffed french toast this is French toast served sandwich style with a prickly pear jam and cream cheese

Ranch House Grille
This is a great place to meet with a high school friend and his beautiful wife. We enjoyed breakfast at Ranch House Grille. It is a very local place. Many entering the grill knew other patrons and shared stories of their families and community. It is a wonderful meal. Large portions, good café coffee, and great hash browns are found here.
Orem Utah Reunion Breakfast
Meeting up with my dear friend Lisa Sherman is like we never missed even one day, even though it had been a few decades. Lisa and I have known each other since we were three. We ran the neighborhood streets as two determined little girls could. We enjoy breakfast at Joe’s Cafe. The food is so delish. Lisa even enjoyed the grits. A dish she is convinced she did not like. Joe said, “You will love them. Nothing comes between your lips and my grits.” It is so wonderful catching up with Lisa after all these years.
3 Sisters Cafe
The first food stop of the trip is 3 Sisters Cafe in Indianapolis, Indiana, in business for 20 years. They serve a large choice of elegant breakfasts from sweet to savory and great lunch menu as well.
They have great beverages (no alcohol) with flair. I enjoyed the turmeric and ginger iced tea. It is a great flavor not too sweet or sugary. The brunch is perfect a great hollandaise sauce over Scottish lox, poached eggs, fresh tomato, and locally made English muffins with caviar on top. The English muffin is fresh with a nice sourdough flavor. The hollandaise sauce is perfect with just a little heat. The porridge is a new experience. It is creamy with a hint of cinnamon.
The Courier Café Urbana
The Courier Café brings Champaign history and old Victorian styling in the decor. The main dining room has:
A large palace chandelier from the Opera House in Erie Pennsylvania
The cash register is the first electric cash register
The courier clock pendulum filled with mercury makes the time keeping right
The stained glass comes from a Danville church predating the Civil War
The Pullman lamps light the aisle for passengers on the Pullman railroad cars
The brass chimes a gift from George Malford, a Nickelodeon Maker, they are steamed powered
The Café’s name is for the Courier newspaper that operated for decades in the building. The building is almost lost to fire and remained empty for decades. In 1980, the current owners began remodeling and opened for business on November 10, 1980. They are a farm to table restaurant with the garden and bees on the property for the freshest ingredients.
The menu is a hearty all American menu with breakfast served daily until 11 AM then lunch and dinner menu until closing. The breakfast is traditional eggs, omelets, fantastic pancakes, and hash browns. Their coffee is fresh ground daily and they have special blends. The lunch/dinner menu is hearty with a ribeye sandwich, fries, soups, and steak. The food has that home cooked look and feel. They do have a few items for vegetarians including breakfast sausage. They do have one special treat “Courier water this is sparkling water from deep below the café. It is a great place for large parties and a sense of the community in Champaign.
Scone City
Scone City located in Wicker Park is wonderful for a morning after bar hopping or late night in Chicago. Jessica and Tim Canning along with chef Laurie McNamara took on the endeavor in a specialized sweet and savory scone menu. This place is a perfect stop as my sister Cherie is heading to the airport to return to her family in Idaho. It is so wonderful sharing this experience with here. Seeing places and enjoying the cross-country journey. I truly miss her every day. She enjoyed a sweet blueberry w/ lemon glaze scone she says, “It is delicious!! Sweet. Soft. Perfection!!! Soooo tasty.” They have savory scones as well. I enjoyed a hot Vanilla Bean Latte with the house-made vanilla syrup. It is a perfect start to a day of exploring Chicago..
Kanela Breakfast in Chicago
The last morning of the road trip in the Midwest is brunch at Kanela, the Greek name for Cinnamon. This restaurant place is Wicker Park neighborhood on a street with many older shops. It is a great place, voted best in Chicago by USA Today, for a Sunday morning brunch. The coffee tops and wonderful after an evening at Bangers and Lace.
Brunch includes California Benedict and Fried Egg Sandwich this is an exceptional meal. The hollandaise sauce perfection with a nice touch of heat, the poach egg picture perfect. The sandwich is fabulous with the chili aioli brings the flavors together. The seasoned potatoes nicely cooked not too soft or undercooked. It is a nice brunch with my sister. We do agree that this is a great place for brunch.
Milk Bar NYC
Super excited to try crack pie and coffee for breakfast. This is a planned find in NYC. Watching Chef’s Table on Netflix. I knew I needed to try Milk Bar. This is Christine Tosi’s and is part of the Manhattan-based Momofuku restaurant. This is my first stop in the morning. The little shop has great cookies, cakes, pies, and bagel bombs. I order an iced coffee, bagel bomb with spinach, and crack pie. The bagel bomb is warm and filled with spinach and cheese. It is a nice bite for the start of touring NYC. I save the crack pie for a little later, but it is delicious. The filling is something like a custard, but buttery. The oat crust is light and flaky. This is a must stop and see.

The internet is a great resource for people who are looking for pre-owned items that are being sold for a lower price. However, the risk of buying fakes is high, especially if someone is looking at a pre-owned luxury item. This dilemma of people who do not want to buy fakes online gave Julie Wainwright the idea to establish a different kind of retail business. In 2011, she founded The RealReal, which has become the largest pre-owned luxury online retailer in the world. Through her efforts, the company became known around the world, and they managed to increase their market size to serve millions of people who are looking to buy pre-owned luxury items. Julie Wainwright’s decision to create that kind of business allowed her to become a successful entrepreneur.
Company
The company owns a huge warehouse situated in Brisbane, California,
and most of the items obtained from their consignors are being brought here for
further authentication and testing. Once the item managed to get through the
meticulous eyes of the authenticating experts, it will be photographed and
uploaded to their website. Julie Wainwright said that the company is able to
upload between 2,000 to 4,000 new items daily, and they are expecting these
items to be shipped within 72 hours. With more than 10,000 consignors on their
list, the company would never run out of supply. More people are also
approaching them to become their consignors, which has become a great
opportunity for those who own luxury items.
Co-Signor
There are two ways on how to become a consignor. According to Julie Wainwright, they can send a luxury manager to a location where the consignor lives if there are 10 or more luxury items to be presented. This program, called the White Glove service, will pick up the items from the consignor’s home and ship it to their warehouse without any cost. On the other hand, if there are less than 10 items presented, the consignor can ship it to the company’s warehouse without any cost. They can ask for a free consignment kit that will be provided by the company. At the warehouse, the items will be authenticated, and once it is approved, it will be uploaded to their online store.
About the Brand
Julie Wainwright welcomes all luxury brands, but she highlighted that there are some which outperform the others. Gucci, for example, is one of their best-selling brands in the warehouse. The management of Gucci embraced the business structure of The RealReal and has welcomed the reselling of Gucci branded items on their website. On the other hand, there are brands who have been vocal against the business structure established by Julie Wainwright. Take Chanel for example, which has recently filed a case against the company. Chanel has been accusing Julie Wainwright and her company of selling fake products, and Chanel also wanted the company to stop selling their brands because they are not an official retailer. Julie Wainwright dismissed the lawsuit filed against her company and stated that she can face them in court without the fear of having her business closed down. She was backed with those who love the service from the company, saying that the fiasco means that Chanel does not want people from buying their products at a lower price.
The RealReal
Despite the lawsuit filed against The RealReal, Julie Wainwright is still optimistic that the company will continue to operate. More people are becoming interested in the business structure of the company, and they are signing in as an official consignor. Julie Wainwright is also happy to announce that their consignors who are sending items for their online store kept on supporting the luxury retail industry by buying new luxury items.
Oscars presents foreign film Foreign Films symposiums. Providing insight into the directors’ Oscar-nominated films.
Foreign Film Theatre
Gathering Saturday to attend the evening Nominees Symposium we found ourselves surrounded by many who attend every year. One family is attending for the 24th year, they did miss the first symposium.
Sitting in the theatre the white screen where the top films in history screened. Today the top foreign film directors surround me. The stories fill the sound of people’s stories and lives. Taking in all the emotions that the directors have developed. It is a true honor.
This is the 60th year for the Foreign Film category;La Strada states, “It took The Academy 27 years to realize that not all great filmmaking is American.” Mark Johnson, Academy governor representing the Producers Branch and the chair of the Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, stated, “there is a depth in this category, foreign films, they are becoming more accessible. It is not necessary to make an American film.” This year the Academy nominated 5 films from 85 submitted foreign films. The nominted films areTanna, Land Of Mine, Tori Erdmann, The Salesman, and A Man Called Ove.
Foreign Film A Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove brings the sense of losing a lifelong partner to reality. This may be something many will experience in their lifetime, but not understand until that time. Hannes Holm, The Director, talks about taking a novel to the film he says, “He felt like a thief taking the book story to film. The version is his not the author’s version of the book. Frederick Morheden, the novelist, told him yes!”
The story is of a husband losing his wife. The struggle with disorder and absence of her presence he becomes desperate with the struggle. He turns to enforcing association rules and gives up on life. He develops a most unlikely relationship.
Holm’s discussed the film with us after the symposium. He feels that each time the movie is different. He believes that he is only fifty percent of a film. The audience is the other fifty percent. Holms is htrilled to be theatre where some of the world’s greatest films are screened.
This film’s nomination and awards also include: “Nominated – Best Foreign Language Film and Best Achievement for Makeup & Hairstyling (Love Larson & Eva von Bahr), 89th Academy Awards® Winner – Best European Comedy, 29th European Film Awards Winner – Best Actor (Rolf Lassgård), 2016 Seattle International Film Festival Golden Space Needle Award, Winner – Audience Award, Best Actor (Rolf Lassgård), Best Makeup (Love Larson & Eva Von Bahr), 2016 Guldbagge Awards, Winner – Audience Award, 2016 Mill Valley Film Festival & 2016 Traverse City Film Festival Winner – Audience Award for Best Film, 2016 Scottsdale International Film Festival.” This film may be viewed here Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft, and ViaPlay.
Foreign Film Tanna
Tanna, a South Pacific island, is a story about the Yakel Tribe. The love interest of Wawa may change the tribe’s world for generations to come. The film is cast by the tribe leaders. Its presentation is in their native language. Martin Butler and Bentley Dean, film directors, state, “This was a collaboration film.” JJ acted as the language and cultural interpreter for the film.
The film did present many hurdles. The island has no electricity. The filming and editing with solar power. Casting was done by tribal leaders. They did have a few issues the almost imploded the film. The tribe members had never seen a film. The crew created a natural warm. the environment for a cast that did not even have a sense of filmmaking to be comfortable and present their best acting. They filmed a lot to ensure a good presence. The story had no written script. The story is a collaborated dialog based on each day shooting best. There were no rehearsals.
The world primer was with tribe. The chief said, “This is our Movie.” This film’s awards also include: Awards: AACTA Award for Best Original Music Score, Special Mention for Feature-length Fiction Film Nominations: AACTA Award for Best Direction. You can view the film on Amazon.
Foreign Film Land of Mine
Land Of Mine, Under Sandet original title, is based on actual events after World War II German prisoners of war. They are ordered to clear over 2 million land mines on the Denmark shoreline.
Director, Martin Zandvloet, “This film is about how we view human beings. We need to be more aware of viewing human being’s as individuals. I am grateful to the editor for his insightful talent. The bricklayer he finds walking on set with a cup of coffee is the best job.”
This film awarded Best Canadian Film at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2015. It won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. The film also won Best Danish Film at the Bodil Award plus more. You can view this film here iTunes, GooglePlay, MicroSoft, & Via Play.
Foreign Film Toni Erdmannthe
Toni Erdmannthe, a film about a jokester father and his very busy CEO daughter. He hires someone to play his daughter. He wonders who is going to pay that bill.
The film has received criticism regarding the length. Director, Maren Ade,states, “Took notes after premiere and was afraid to make those changes. She stewed a few days but left it.” The comedy is character driven. The play with the dentures developed from a set that was a gift while the director was a waitress.
Foreign Film The Salesman
The Salesmanis about a couple begins performing Death of A Salesman their relationship begins to change. Asghar Farhadi, from Iran, was not in attendance at the symposium. He made a choice to stay away after the recent ban by the US President put in place a travel ban. He did send a message that he was honored to be nominated and had a lot of respect for the Academy. All directors present signed a letter in solidarity with Farhadi.
We had the honor of meeting actor Brian Avery after the event. He is thrilled for Oscars week. He found the films to be inspirational in talent and film. You can learn more about Avery’s acting career here.
The symposium provides a great insight to the processes of filmmaking and how it works world wide. Many film makers receive funding from their governments. Looking forward to the announcement at the 89th Oscars for Foreign Language Film 60th winner.
