I Care A Lot film by Netflix’s new movie starring Rosamund Pike. Rosmund Pike’s character Marla Grayson is one you want to hate and fight for during the movie, She is never afraid even in moments when she should be terrified.
I Care A Lot Synopsis
Grayson has found a way to earn a living legally by being a guardianship for elderly. She is strong, confident, and has the trust of many making the decisions for these elderly clients. Her office wall is display of many who she has guardianships over. Her career she has developed that is morally questionable but legal. She convince one doctor to turn over her “golden ticket” guardianship.
Dianne Wiest playing Jennifer Peterson appears perfect on paper for guardianship. She is single, no family, and has money. Grayson gains guardianship over Peterson. She begins to sell her belongings. Little does she know Peterson is connected to the Russian mob boss Roman Lunyov, played by Peter Dinklage.
The story plot then splits in many directions from you loving Grayson and cheering her on as a boss lady, to hating Grayson, and the criminal aspect. Grayson believe in this country you have to be brave, stupid, ruthless, and focused. Playing fair and scared gets you no where.
“Nasty people do terrible things in this wildly entertaining Netflix caper about guardianship fraud,” states, Jeannette Catsoulis from The NYTimes.
I Care A Lot Power Struggle
J Blakeson, director of the film, moves this film from boss lady to one woman who will do all that she can to be very rich. The character development is strong in the film. The film becomes lost in the three separate films all tied together with the theme of crime, passion, and power.
Blakeson directs the change from Grayson being all powerful over Peterson to being the underdog. The power Grayson presents with is one of a powerful caring business woman. The power shifts back and forth between Grayson and Lunyov. The end they join their powers together.
There are time the film feels similar to many powerful strong women films but you are questioning yourself on the morality at the ease she takes everything legally.
I Care A Lot Are You Afraid?
Lunyov asks Grayson, “I am going to kill you now . . . you’re not afraid of death? Grayson answers, “Do you remember how scary it was in 1807? Me either because I was not alive yet. It will feel the same way when I am dead. Not even nothing why be scared of that.”
Her ability to not be afraid in the end gives her the win of being back in power. Legally making money being guardians with a large corporation gaining the wealth she always wanted in life. The twists and turns leaving some unpredictability in the plot.
In the end she remains ruthless, powerful, and someone who cares (so it appears).

Pearl power is seen at the inauguration. The United States comes together to show the power of democracy and fashion. Kamala Harris is the first Asian, African American woman as Vice-President. She joins the list of one but many will follow. The supporters for this day is the power of many women.
The fashion is a show of color, personality, and solidarity. Harris’ pearls are a homage to the sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha. Many women wore pearls in solidarity to Harris. The pearl is a show of great rarity and worth. These women are just that.
Harris’ Fashion
Harris is wearing Christopher John Rogers to the swearing-in ceremony. The fashion remains true to the simple minimal fashion Harris is often seen wearing. The purple represents unity and is in honor of Shirley Chisholm. She did not sport her traditional chucks for the day. She is wearing a pair of black pumps. The evening she is wearing Sergio Hudson. This black dress went from a ball gown to a cocktail dress. This was sleek and elegant. She is setting fashion trends.
The clear choice to use black designers for her fashion on this day demonstrates that black designers can be luxvsiourious and glamourous. Taking away the they are just street and urban designers. Hudson is honored by the fashion choice brings these designers to the front of design and style.
Women Honoring Harris Fashion
Jill Biden’s Fashion
Jill Biden’s evening gown designed by, Gabriela Hearst, designer known for unity. Hearst states on Instagram, “Unity is the main inspiration for the creation of the Ensemble. Unity makes strength and it is needed for the road ahead.”
This cashmere coat and gown covered in embroider flowers representing the states and territories of the United States. The quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn,” Benjamin Franklin embroider on the lining.
Biden’s inauguration fashion is:
Wing & Weft designed the patten leather gloves for the day, the gloves for the evening gown, and the memorial the day before inauguration for COVID-19. This is the last glove designer in the garment district
Jonathan Cohen designed the purple dress and coat for victims of Covid-19 memorial service
Alexandra O’Neill designed the blue tweed coat with velvet cuffs and the embellished dress with Swarovski crystals and pearls. This is signifying trust, confidence, and stability.
Jimmy Choo heels for the blue tweed coat.
Amanda Gorman’s Fashion
Amanda Gorman, poet laureate is wearing Prada. The ring was a gift f’s rom Oprah Winfrey. She had given a ring to Maya Angelou and wanted to continue the tradition. The ring is a bird cage with a bird in there. This reminds Gorman of Maya’s poetry. Winfrey all gifted a pair of gold hoop earrings by designer Nikos Koulis, his passion for jewelry is a sharp outlook and authentic passion.
Former First Ladies Fashion
Hudson designed Michelle Obama’s fabulous look. This is a monochromatic burgundy turtleneck sweater and wide-legged bootcut pants, with a structured coat. The leather gold belt is also from Hudson. Obama noted for her choice of black designers often and fashion that states I am here to play. Her gloves designed by J.Crew gloves
Laura Bush a lady who is often seen wearing pearls, much like her mother-in-law Barbara Bush. Bush remained comfortable throughout the day with flats with bows. She is wearing a knee-length and classic cut dark gray dress.
Hillary Clinton fashion choice is color of unity and optimism designed by Ralph Lauren. She stayed true to her love of pant suits. Did Clinton influence some of Kamala’s fashion choices?
Surprise fashionista Bernie Sanders
Did you feel the “bern?” Bernie Sanders is the talk of social media over his gloves. A gift he received 5 years ago, no you can get yourself a pair they are all sold out. Jen Ellis made the recycled mittens in 2016. He did not sport the pearls but stole the fashion show.
The power of what fashion represented this day was well thought out and meaningful. The power of women is seen in the unity and strength of a pearl. What was your favorite fashion or moment of the day?
“iDildo does the trick and you don’t have to cook it food or wash its sock.” Romina Schwedler’s latest comedy short film about certain aged women feeling invisible and often misinterpreted. She uses light and comedy to carry a deeper message.
Synopsis
Now You See Us is is “a coming of (a certain) age story” about two rival actresses played by Barbara Miluski and Caroline Ryburn. They are both auditioning for a part in a TV commercial. They begin to realize that they have more in common than just a rivalry.
Film Details
This 11-minute film brings the best of age discrimination and a lifelong rivalry full circle. The women find common ground in the idea that the one line in the commercial is the actress holding up a cell and stating, “I only use it in emergencies.” The cell phone begins the conversation about women of a certain age struggle with technology.
Caroline says, “I have an i-phone, i-pad, and an iDildo. It does the trick, you don’t have to cook for it, or wash its sock.” They both laugh at the idea that they had made large changes and sacrifices in their life. Even that iDildo is better than having someone around.
The walls break-down when they realize that they are being stereotyped for acting roles. “Boomers” no longer matter. They were the pitch to crowd, changing food, and fashion. They are invisible now.
Light and Comedy Use
The entire film is black and white adding a feel of age. The dimness of light in the waiting area adds to the tension of their rivalry. The loss of light brings the cell phone use in the time of an emergency adding to the humor. The end of the film light is used to bring awareness to the issues that these women are facing
The phases of the moon photos in the room where the audition is to take place clearly demonstrate the many phases of life the women this age experienced. This is a connecting piece that puts the rivalry to rest and they start sharing their impressions on being invisible.
Director Romina Schwedler
Romina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She moved to New York to attend American Ballet School at 15. She followed in her parent’s footsteps (she is a director, actress, and singer) by becoming a filmmaker. Her film, The Visit, was screened at 47 film festivals including Prescott’s Film Festival. The film received 13 awards, 16 nominations, and 5 special mentions. Awards include Best Short Film, Best Overall Festival Film, and Best Director.
Now You See Us
The film’s cast and crew are women. This adds to the dimension of the film’s focus on a section of women that is often discriminated against and stereotyped.

The Visit is a day in the time of a visit with a mother (June Squibb) and son (Sean Maher). The story takes a moment in time for the son and develops a sequence of events that changes lives. The son must face the consequences of the events.
Schwedler’s attention to details in the film completes the story. She states, “every little detail, in the lighting, the wardrobe design, and every odd thing matters.” The juxtaposition of the story develops well with the attention to details.
Schwedler develops the story from a conversation with her father about her aunt. Her aunt experiences loss of most family and friends. Coping with the deep grief and loss her aunt develops elaborate stories regarding those she lost. Her techniques in film development here allow the audience to experience the emotions in the story.
The casting for the short film was “serendipitous,” she says. She approaches June Squibb, Oscar-nominated actress, at an award dinner in Los Angeles with a flash drive of the script. Sean Maher, Ben in the short film, heard about the project and appreciates June Squibb’s work. His agent contacted Schwedle in regards to working on the project. The casting provides a twist much like the film. Check local film festival events for screening.

Making cinnamon rolls Food Ellie is excited to create grammy’s cinnamon rolls. Ellie’s favorite treat from grammy is cinnamon rolls.
Ellie comes for a summer visit to celebrate the Juneteenth and swim for the weekend with grammy. She made her first pie crust for a sweet potato pie for the family Juneteenth dinner.
Measuring out the Flour
Loves Washing The Dishes
“always check for eggshells.”
Juneteenth Dinner
Ellie’s advice is to always check the bowl for eggshells and wash up the dishes when done. She was determined to do this herself. She measured each cup of flour to be one cup ( I usually use my senses to measure for bread). It was a wonderful day baking with her. Sharing the tradition I learned from my own grandmother.
Cinnamon Roll Tradition
My grandmothers on my mother’s side were known for their outstanding baking skills. They always used all-purpose flour, white sugar, and no eggs to make cinnamon rolls. Family recipes are fun to create.
I remember reading my great-great grandmother’s story gathering sego lilies and grinding them into flour to bake bread, cinnamon rolls, and creating pies. They did this after settling in Idaho from the Mid-West and food was scare. It is a make it work moment.
In a large bowl or Kitchen Aid, mixing bowl with the bread hook attachment. Add 2 cups of the flour and both yeast pkg. on top of the flour.
In a large pot on the stove on low add whole milk, butter, salt, and sugar heat warm to the touch.
Foodie Ellie Warming Milk
Pour the warm to touch mixture over the flour and yeast. Mix well on low if using Kitchen Aid. When mixed well add
2 eggs blending after adding each egg.
Slowly add the remaining flour (this will vary each time how much) 1 cup at a time. Mix well after each addition. Increase speed on the Kitchen Aid as needed. The dough should be firm and start to pull away from the sides of the bowl when enough flour is added. Knead by hand for 12-14 minutes (stretch and pull using palms of your hands). In the Kitchen Aid mix for two minutes on setting 8. This is equivalent to 12-14 minutes needing by hand.
Food Ellie Measuring out the Flour
Raising Cinnamon Rolls
Butter the sides of a large bowl. Place dough in a buttered bowl and cover with plastic wrap. My grandmothers used a clean dish towel. This does create a slight crust on the dough as it rises. Let dough rise until double size about 1 1/2 hours. Punch down, let rest 10 min.

Punching Down Dough
Next, roll the cinnamon roll dough into a circle, dust with flour if sticking, roll about 1/4″ thick. Brush the melted butter on the rolled out dough. Then sprinkle the cinnamon and then sugar till well covered. You are welcome to mix the butter, cinnamon, and sugar together then spread on the dough with a butter knife. Roll the dough each roll please pull towards you. Then cut in 2-inch rolls with a sharp knife (children can use a butter knife it will be a change the shape of the cinnamon roll some but good experience for them).

Teaching family recipes are so important in keeping the traditions and flavors alive. Taking time to recreate and creating new alterations make a life long memory that can last for generations. We enjoyed homemade pizza with the extra dough.
The waffle iron that lasts for decades. The one I still use today comes from a yard sale in Long Beach Washington (1997), the longest beach in the world.
Generational Waffle Iron
Waffle Iron Story
The request while at the beach home was waffles for Sunday breakfast. Just as we drove from a moment downtown Long Beach we find a yard sale. The Hamilton waffle iron is right for the best price of $2. It was a gem for the day if even for the Sunday meal.
This waffle iron has been around since then. It always works and makes perfect waffles. It has gone from the beach to home to the desert in a move. The children have grown and started there own families. The tradition continues with the waffle iron for my granddaughter.
Recently #FoodieEllie (my granddaughter) requested waffles for a Saturday breakfast. She said, “I am going to watch TV while you make me waffles, pleeaassee grammy.” I did take the time to make the waffles.
This is a perfect brunch after the 4th of July holiday weekend. #FoodieEllie loves blueberries and they can be added fresh it gives a nice squeeze of juice inside. Her 4th of July in Champaign Illinois was blueberry waffles. She found the blueberries at the local farmers market. Perfection.

Waffle Breakfast
Waffle Directions
Preheat waffle iron according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
In a small bowl, whisk buttermilk and eggs yolks; pour over flour mixture, and whisk gently to combine (don’t overmix). Gently whisk in butter and sour cream. Fold in whipped egg whites.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, cook waffles until deep brown and crisp. (For a standard waffle iron, pour a generous 1/2 cup of batter into center, spreading to within 1/2 inch of edges, and close; waffle will cook in 2 to 3 minutes.) Allow your guests to top their waffles with their favorite.
